Will IBM use the servers that handled WCG as crunchers for WCG once the hand over is complete? Aren't they moving as a part of WCG? ![]() |

Will IBM use the servers that handled WCG as crunchers for WCG once the hand over is complete? WCG is hosted at IBM Cloud so those servers will probably be used for something else in the IBM Cloud. Either way, you should try asking on the Questions and Answers thread. BladeD, They'll transfer the databases and all that stuff to the Krembil servers. Like knreed posted the other day, it's similar to when WCG was transferred to the IBM Cloud a couple of years ago. We should expect 2 days of downtime. Bearcat responded to a question with a comment: As long as there questions are true, I will stick around and crunch. The second they deviate, I am gone! |

Just discovering the new frame of the forums
----------------------------------------Remarks: 1) the mention of "FORUMS" is not on top of the page in the same line as research , my contribution and so on So i had to find it on the bottom of page with very little characters 2) the badges are not very colourful even bland ; we loose some warm in the change Not very pleased of that ![]() NOUS SOMMES TOUS DES CHERCHEURS EN PUISSANCE ![]() |

More comments moved to the correct thread:
markevans wrote: I have set my devices to stop receiving new work units. It is unlikely that I will continue to participate. I know nothing about Krembil. It's possible that I will terminate work in progress. Allowing Krembil access to my devices could be risky. rlbrooks replied: I suspect I will take similar actions. I will miss contributing to the Grid but BOINC has many other worth while projects. Falconet replied: I fail to see what risk anyone is taking by allowing their computers to run work from a non-profit Canadian research Institute. If this indeed worries you, you should quit every BOINC project you participate in. |

Another comment from the Q&A thread
verlyol-belgium wrote: I am very very surprised by this change and I will observe this transition very carefully. I really hope that the results of the projects will remain in the public domain and free ... And I sincerely hope that the WCG spirit will remain the same. |

This is not good news. Projects do not grow by leaving one of the worlds largest companies to 'seek funding from diverse sources'. IBM ditched the World Community Grid and Krimbal was nice enough to keep the project going. But their staff have other projects. It's a lot easier to recruit people to WCG when I say it's IBM curating the projects, because people trust IBM. The only people who know about KRI are Canadians. That's gonna be one more complicated thing we have to explain before donors agree to participate. Maybe you are projecting your own preferences into other people? I came here around 2013 (with a different user, of wich I don't remember the email address anymore) and it wasn't because it was an IBM project but because it was a BOINC project. If it used a different platform (like FH does) I would probably never joined. For me, seamless integration with other distributed computing projects is paramount. |

BOINC is important, but just being on BOINC doesnt prove stability since it is only the platform and not responsible for the project itself. ![]() EPYC 7V12 / [5] RTX A4000 EPYC 7B12 / [5] RTX 3080Ti + [2] RTX 2080Ti EPYC 7B12 / [6] RTX 3070Ti + [2] RTX 3060 [2] EPYC 7642 / [2] RTX 2080Ti |

I came to WCG from Seti. There are a bunch of good projects using the boinc platform, so I had to figure out what I wanted in a project. I think we all need to think about what brought us to WCG to determine if we want to stay now that a different group is running it.
It looks like from what I'm reading in the forum that it will continue to be an open data, research, non-profit, safe place. So if you are here for a particular project, then you probably want to stay for that project. Personally I'm here for the community. A group of people to chat with about projects. I would like to see the forums listed as an option in the top Community menu. I fear with them buried in a list at the bottom of the page that the community aspect will dwindle. I do think it is important to give the transition time. It isn't a time for a rushed huffy judgement. I was pleased to see that some items that irked me have already been changed (fixed?). So I'm in wait and see mode. I hope that you (the forum community) will mostly stay as I enjoy reading your posts, and interacting with you (well most of you :-P ). |
