Re: Transition Talk

Being a WGC lightweight, sorry for my lack of knowledge of WCG on the overarching role of IBM or the cloud based task distribution but will the research project options with Krembil be the same as IBM? Or will they be Krembil only? I only have a couple of (overengineered) decent gaming spec PCs I donate the computing power to 24/7 but would like to think the transition will be a logo change and nothing else.

Or is it more?

At the moment 50% of the WCG projects are sponsored by KRI.In the future (after the transition period) I guess that is likely to rise but not become exclusive.

Apart from that, from what is being said, this is badge engineering / a logo change.

To add on Bryn Mawr's reply, here's a link to a post from Dr. Jurisica.

In short, WCG will remain open to other researchers.

25% of the active ones...? It's just MCM.

Re: Transition Talk

I'm US citizen I will not support Canadian private company's research. Also they're profit company and results will not open to all world. Several years ago IBM sold laptops to China(Lenovo) this is first shock and that one is my second shock about IBM./

I'm so sorry I will continue with Folding@home and Rosetta@home
Goodbye

Re: Transition Talk

A few reminders:

1. Please read the article about the transition before commenting or asking questions. It addresses some of the concerns that have come up in this thread.

2. After reading the article, please read through the existing Questions and Answers thread about the transition to see if your question(s) have been addressed.

3. Please ask any new questions in the Question and Answer thread, which we are monitoring to make sure questions are answered as quickly as possible, and which we created to keep information in one place so that volunteers can find it more easily.

Thank you to everyone for your participation and support.

Re: Transition Talk

SCC will (IMO) come back at some point. FightAIDS@home may also come back but they are focused on SARS-CoV-2.
We already know there is a Parkinson project in the very early stages and Alzheimer's disease seems like a probable target at some point given the KRI's research focus.

Ebola, I'm not sure such a project is needed. We had one in the past but haven't heard anything about it since it ended but I was reading just yesterday that the researcher who originally discovered the virus says that Ebola has been defeated thanks to the vaccines and treatments that are now available.

So, 4 out of 5 sounds good? :)

Re: Transition Talk

First of all, thanks to IBM for having created the World Community Grid.

Secondly, I think this can be very good. World Community Grid will now be run by a research institute.

Thirdly, I'm very excited about the future science projects alluded to in the article, including the Parkinson project (which I assume is run by someone at Krembil). Hopefully, we can get many more projects going.

Couldn't agree more! Congratulations, IBM and Krembil Research Institute!
"If we're not here to find the cure, then why the hell are we here?" (Dr. Donald Weaver).
I am now full back to WCG crunch! cool

Re: Transition Talk

Will IBM use the servers that handled WCG as crunchers for WCG once the hand over is complete?
