Re: Work Available

dcs1955,

It is random on when the work is available on the feeder and when your machine requests work. There isn't anything extra tying results to specific hosts.

Thanks,

Re: Work Available

If a machine is requesting work often enough it will get both projects, sooner or later. If not, it will not.

Re: Work Available

Your success-rate will by little to none if ONLY waiting for ARP1 jobs. You really need to run another WCG science on the side to keep the scheduler checking in with the server. If not, the connection interval will increment to as much as 24 hours, IIRC.

In my case I run all sciences on the side, each with restricted threads use, the sum though making sure no threads go idle. Doing about 55-60 jobs a day on the machine means that 55-60 times a day, at random times, the server is queried for new work. Since all the other sciences are topped out (Device Profile max allowed settings), it is in effect each time asking for a substitute for the reported task, say an MCM1, PLUS ARP1 as that is always short on the client.

Went dry 2 days ago for that one, then last night landed 4 and a 5th this morning. That will keep that 1 thread busy for the next 96 hours meaning 96 times 55 to 60 times a chance to hit on a slot with the chosen one in it.

Since the scheduler cycle after a reported task & 'no-work available' starts anew at 2 minutes, 4 minutes, 8 minutes, whatever the increment rate is, my client really connects many times more than the 55-60 completed results, upping the chances further. In effect, except for the few days, the machine has been crunching ARP1 on 1 thread pretty much non-stop since project launch, that's basically 1 out of the 2016 that gets sent out every day, since the computing time is somewhere between 21-24 hours on this host. It's though the average is 1 per day, the last time landing 4, it went without a resupply for 120 hours. And this is with the servers programmed random distribution to give all a more equal chance. I run 8 threads, some run hundreds and upwards, so their chances are greater to at least catch a few more. That's OK.

Re: Work Available

It is really quite easy to adjust the settings to get more arp units. Just follow the instructions below.

mcm and mip units are readily available and are of short crunching time, so they will give you a rapid turnover so frequent requests for more work.

Set your Device Profile (sidebar on tasks or project tabs) to custom profile.

Under available Projects check arp, mcm and mip, plus hst if you want that as well (another in short supply).

Under Work Unit Cache settings set both fields to 1.5 days.

Under Project Limits set arp, (hst) and mcm to 6 and mip to 4.

That should get you a trickle of arp (and hst) units as well as enough mcm and mip to keep all threads (cores) of your machine flat out.

The numbers are for an 8 thread (core) machine but are scalable up or down for other machines.

The 6/4 split for mcm/mip should achieve an average of 5/3 to allow for capacity problems with mip and allows for 1 extra each to overlap the 2/3 minute period from uploading to the next download is completed.

When you do get some arp (and hst) units, your machine will automatically start those units when the next mcm/mip unit finishes.

If you do happen to get more than 4 arp units, then restrict the numbers crunching to 3 using app_config (see an earlier post of mine on this thread) to keep your machine listed as 'reliable' (lots of posts here about that) and also to avoid capacity problems.

If you do use app_config then set arp, (hst) and mip to 3 and mcm to 5. That will enable arp (and hst) to kick in whenever available, but other wise crunch 5 mcm and 3 mip units.

Re: Work Available

Mike, that ratio has a lot of MIP running simultaneously. Since they slow each other down, I recommend running them sparingly.

Re: Work Available

The split could work if you're running a newer AMD chip. The Ryzen 3600 has 12 threads and 32 mb of L3 cache. I have two of those right now, and am running 7 mip work units simultaneously, averaging about an hour per unit, so I'm not hitting the slowdown on those machines. But if you're running 4 simultaneous MIP on pretty much anything Intel (short of their newer server chips), you're probably going to hit slowdown.

Dayle

Up to 3 mip on an 8 thread machine is ok. Likewise arp. However I check occasionally to make sure they are not likely to finish at the same time by suspending the later one for a few minutes to keep them apart. Like a car driving too close to the one in front should be braked so they don't crash.

Spreading them out helps with the random availability.

Re: Work Available

Good Morning!

I have some good news to report. We have started the initial transfers of data to the researchers from our end. The speeds are looking promising. As a result, we are increasing the speed of ARP1 today. We will be starting the increase slowly before we get to full speed, but as of now, the rate will be 2000 workunits (4000 results) per day.

Thanks,
-Uplinger
