Re: climate change projects

That's one of the hard things with being on the cutting edge; you need to make tools to do things people never imagined before. And it often takes longer than you think because no one has done this.

And they already said they found bugs in the software to start with!

Re: Climate change projects

shhh
I have been wondering what ARP (from the names of the new BETA tasks) could mean. thinking Inadvertently I was looking at the Research Overview page and my eyes were curiously drawn to Climate Change to the left. confused After clicking that link I couldn't help looking for the letters A, R and P and quickly I noticed "Rainfall modeling in Africa". shock The first line underneath that text tells us: In Africa, agriculture relies heavily on localized rainfall, which is difficult to predict. nerd

A few moments later it dawned on me and so if I was to make a small prediction for the name of the new project it would be: African Rainfall Prediction. idea

Of course this could be completely wrong. sick

Re: Climate change projects

Could be. I can't decide if the techs are being forthcoming with the beta WU names because the three projects are already released, or if they are being sneaky (African rainfall could be the third to be released, and the three betas could be ARP1, ARP2, and ARP3).

If it is the African rainfall project, based on the information in the beta thread that each WU is looking at 81 sq km over 48 hrs, for one year of prediction at quorum 2, that puts us around 137 million WUs. Potentially closer to 150 million after resends and depending on how things along the coasts are split up. With the run times happening in beta, that would put this project into the MCM category in terms of size.

Once upon a time a follow up project to AfricanClimate@Home was promised but no takers in terms of development were found (or the money ran out). It'd be nice to take this up again for a larger area.

There are those who believe that Darwin was wrong, that man has devolved from his ancestors and is, in fact, the lowest of the animals. Among them is Mark Twain.

Re: Climate change projects

... and there are those who think that so much fossil fuel will be burnt generating electricity to run the computers to perform the climate simulations that global warming will be significantly increased, so the calculations will have to be run all over again ...
