Comparing CPU times, Linux vs Windows, for beta21 version 7.30:
In yesterday's (7 Jan 19) release, I had 1 Linux-x64 WU and a number of Windows-x64 WUs, but this time on different but comparable devices: Linux x64; Device: Callisto-VM - 3770K @ 4.3GHz FAH2_ 002225_ zinc00657519_ 000001_ 000005_ 007_ 0-- 5.14 / 5.15 Windows 7 x64; Device: Io - 3770K @ 4.2GHz FAH2_ 002228_ zinc00671629_ 000003_ 000057_ 007_ 0-- 4.94 / 4.95 FAH2_ 002228_ zinc00671629_ 000003_ 000024_ 006_ 0-- 4.68 / 4.68 FAH2_ 002229_ zinc00696116_ 000004_ 000071_ 004_ 0-- 4.61 / 4.62 Average CPU time for Io = 4.74h Scaling to 4.3GHz = 4.63h 5.14 / 4.63 = 1.11. i.e. 11% slower under Linux Today I had a similar situation, and the Linux WU ran 20% slower than those under Windows. A factor that could influence the speeds is the larger RAM requirements for the Linux WUs. The Linux x64 program is 64-bit, vs 32-bit for Windows x64. The proportion of CPU cache misses could be higher under the fatter 64-bit program. |

I snagged 3 Beta units on January 8, all on Linux. All three showed about a 33% improvement in running time versus the previous version, from around 12 hours to around 8 hours.

Jim1348: "... were all the cores fully loaded on both machines?"
Yes. 6 cores continuously running FAHB or beta jobs under Win 7 x64, 2 cores running VINA or beta jobs in Linux VM on both machines. The Windows betas may have been slowed a tad because the 3 ran simultaneously, so their need for extra main and CPU cache RAM may have affected their speed. RAM timings seem to have little effect on these machines, but FWIW: Linux WU ran on Callisto: 1866MHz 9-10-9-27 3N Windows WUs ran on Io : 1866MHz 10-11-10-30 1N |

Rickjb,
You have done your job well. I am mainly on Linux. It is not a big difference, but curious. The original BEDAM version did much better on Windows. They apparently have to work to get Linux up to speed. |

I got several more, all on Linux. On the Xeon X5650 and X5670 they are consistently on about the 8 hour mark. On the 2600K they run about 6.5 hours. The points distribution is a little off because on the Xeons I am getting 25 to 26 points per hour, but on the 2600K I am getting about 18 points per hour. Not that I am that concerned about points, but I just thought I would mention it.

I'm running a few more through. We have sent back quite a few results to the researchers. They need to do a minor tweak to the input files and confirm things are looking ok before we consider this a success and promote them to production.
Thanks, -Uplinger |

Greetings everyone,
Thank you again for testing the workunits. I have done the extra check after the minor input tweak. We are promoting them to production. Thanks, -Uplinger |

What does that mean for the WUs that are running now? Will they continue?
