Greetings,
We are still working on the BETA test. We are working on testing the updated build for linux that fixes the runtime issues that members were noticing. It will probably be pushed into beta early next week. Thanks, -Uplinger |

Keith,
Will there be a fix to allow the app to run under XP? I haven't had any issues with it once I modified it. Thanks |

I just had a beta unit finish on a Q6600 running Windows Vista. It is about 90 minutes faster than any of the other 6 beta units I have had. All of the other beta units have been run on faster machines all under Linux Mint. All of the Linux units have been about 11.5 to 12.5 hours long. The Windows unit has come in at 9.8 hours. This is only one unit, but it appears Windows may be faster on this application than Linux. Has anyone else seen this discrepancy ? Or is this just a one off anomaly ?
----------------------------------------I did see a post by Uplinger about Linux run time issues, so maybe the techs have it under control. Cheers

Re speed under Linux, vs Windows:
----------------------------------------I'm currently running, on the same device (i5-3470, 4C, no HT, 3.56GHz) 1 beta WU under Linux-x64 in a VM, plus 2 beta WUs under Win7-x64. Linux WU: 4h20m, 69% done, program beta21 version 7.29 [edited to show actual version], WU name: FAH2_002224_zinc00657400_000002_000008_005_0 Windows WUs: 3h26m, 97% done; 3h04m, 86% done [Edit]: Elapsed times at completion: Linux: 6.33 h Windows: 3.56 h, 3.54 h [/edit] There is no perceptible difference in runtimes of Linux WUs under the VM vs under native Linux, so there is still a large speed penalty under Linux with version 7.29 of the program. (Suggestion: What is the diffference when the same compiler, if available, is used under both OSes?) ----- I can confirm that editing the OS and Subsystem Version Nos in the program header as suggested (thanks) by Apis Tintinnambulator enables these WUs to run successfully under Windows XP-x64. We have tested an updated version of the Linux application in alpha and are going to promote it to beta now. This version will be 7.30 for all. The runtimes we saw were comparable to the windows runtimes in alpha.
Thanks, -Uplinger |

Keith, Will there be a fix to allow the app to run under XP? I haven't had any issues with it once I modified it. Thanks Howdy, I have some bad news about the support for Windows XP. We are not supporting Windows XP for WCG projects. The extended support ended almost 5 years ago for Windows XP ( https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsforbusiness/end-of-xp-support ). Personally I would recommend updating those machines that are still running Windows XP to a recent version of Windows or Linux so that your machines become more secure. Thanks, -Uplinger |

We are not supporting Windows XP for WCG projects. I guess that was inevitable. I only just saw this and the 0xC1 errors my machine was getting from the new version. I edited the app again and will keep doing that so long as you don't positively exclude XP systems. I consider most security to be far more about user behaviour than anything else and, while I have considered moving the machine to Unix, it's simpler just to leave well alone. Will there be some sort of announcement, or at least some text on the web site somewhere? |

Keith,
----------------------------------------I just noticed something else FWIW. The CPU time shows more time than the actual run time on my linux host. Run times look to be about 30+% faster than the first app. Well done.

I have 9 tasks running on Linux. The runtimes will be between 10.94 and 11.63 hours.
----------------------------------------The former application needed about 18.5 - 19.5 hours. Well done! The CPU efficiency is between 99.8 and 100%. |
