Re: Ryzen performance

Still don't see the payback in "optimizing" the BOINC program. Most research groups have limited resources (including WCG) and spending time optimizing BOINC would not be the best use of staff time. In addition, most of the science apps have been built to the "lowest common denominator" so they can be used on the greatest number and type of processors. Optimizing to the latest CPU features may actually do more harm than good to their project goals as it ultimately exclude a significant number of contributors. Once again, too much effort expended for very little, or even negative, return.

Re: Ryzen performance

A complete waste of time to 'optimize' the BOINC client... it takes less than 2 minutes of one thread a day to manage the science apps on 8 threads running concurrent 24-24

If anyone thinks the core client needs speeding up, dive into the open source code on github, submit your improved code, and it will be checked and if a accepted, committed by a REVIEWER and merged over at https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/commits/master

ok simple .... we optimise the boinc programs understanding of what features the user has available to utilise and what resources to report, also optimise the feature set to include more eco friendly and performance related function calls, settings.

and to report back to all boinc projects the full feature set of the utilisable hardware.

this is relatively speaking a small workload for 2 or 3 programmers.

Re: Ryzen performance

You may want to acquaint yourself with the term 'homogeneity', a Major issue when building a database of consistent results, or garbage.

Re: Ryzen performance

It will come out sooner than I can come up with the money,
but hopefully the summer will pay off and I can pick one up.
Then my I7 2600K becomes permanent windows 7 basement cruncher.
32 more cores makes 52 total....
CRAZY.

Re: Ryzen performance

Does anyone think the threadripper will force pricing down on the other cpus? I know its in a different category, but one can wish. I want to start a new build around November to take advantage of the sales, so by then I am hoping the ryzen 1700 will be dropping in price.
