Ryzen 16 Core/32 Thread CPU

Although its still only a rumor right now, there is the possibility of a soon to be released RYZEN 16 core 32 thread beast @2.4Ghz base with 2.8Ghz boost.

The price for this chip is also rumored to be at.. wait for it.. $999 US

If this is true, this could be a huge win for us crunchers!!!

Re: Ryzen 16 Core/32 Thread CPU

While it would be pretty cool, I have two concerns/points of skepticism:

1) I'm a bit skeptical at the "X399" chipset name; while it does make sense to be a higher-end extension of X370, it would cause consumer confusion in a couple years when Intel releases their future enthusiast chips on the X299 (for Skylake- and Kaby Lake-X/EP/EN) and, presumably later on, X399 (for Coffee Lake- and Ice Lake-X/EP/EN) chipsets. Perhaps Intel will change its nomenclature so as to not cause confusion if the naming scheme for AMD's chipset is correct, but it seems odd nonetheless.

2) I'm a bit skeptical at the idea of this being a desktop chip, as it could massively cannibalize AMD's future foot into the server market with Naples. After all, I assume the 32-core variant won't be the only SKU in that lineup, much like how the (supposedly) 32-core E5-2699 V5 won't be the only SKU in Intel's Skylake-EP Xeon lineup.

Either way, with Skylake-EP and Naples on the way, and Ryzen already here at great prices, it's a great time to be an enthusiast in this area, now that we're finally getting some much-needed competition for the first time in the better part of a decade.

Happy crunching!

Re: Ryzen 16 Core/32 Thread CPU

This looks like a server chip and also comes at server prices. I suspect it won't fit existing AM4 boards and will probably require ECC memory as well. Total cost of a complete system will be a lot higher than a normal Ryzen 7. Still, great to see this variety of offering in the market, probably interesting for badge hunters who have splurged on Xeon systems.

Re: Ryzen 16 Core/32 Thread CPU

Would be nice if this chip can be configured in a 2P setup. Am due for an upgrade so this may be it. Will wait on prices on Naples before deciding. My current 2P xeon 5690 is showing its age.

Re: Ryzen 16 Core/32 Thread CPU

hmmm my I7 5820K uses about that much energy...
I could swap it out for one of those....
plus I need a new gaming machine, a 1700 would do so
48 cores for same amount of electricity more or less...

My guess is for the consumer grade it will be limited to 1 processor. The only multiprocessor boards I am familiar with all belong to the server class, but perhaps there are some gaming boards which may bridge the gap. I think you would be talking some real money in any kind of multiprocessor set up, at least initially. That 2P 5690 still packs some punch.
Cheers

Re: Ryzen 16 Core/32 Thread CPU

There was, like... one dual-X79-based Ivy Bridge-E board back in late 2012 compatible with two i7 Extreme editions, but it was about as expensive as you'd think it would be, and is probably even more so now that it's very rare.

Re: Ryzen 16 Core/32 Thread CPU

Really hoping that 16 core and 32 core 'naples' chips will see retail availability.
AMD has a sales page for their old server line, and it's a mess.
Even after all these years, there's no way to sort by what CPU is in what machine, and only package deals available. We don't need hundreds of gigs of ram or duplicate power supplies to contribute to WCG.

Re: Ryzen 16 Core/32 Thread CPU

I have run a number of servers with dual power supplies. In order to save electricity, only plug in one of the power supplies. The servers run just fine. The only downside is I get an error message on the front display telling me one power supply is off line.
Also I have one of my machines with 24 threads running with 8gigs of memory and it runs just fine with any VINA project.
Cheers
