this is the only BOINC project that doesn't allow special characters like $ and @ in the account password Discussed ad nauseam, e.g. what exactly is there to steel to warrant special character enabling like were it a bank-account? If a registration/password would be breached, the original account mail address owner gets an email of activity and if it was yours, even if the ligit owner changes key items of the registration, a mail is issued. |

Perhaps you don't quite understand the difference between banning minors (an unconditional rejection) and asking them if they have parent or guardian consent, but I can assure you that pretty much everyone under 18 sees a yuuuge difference & thinks that a) the former is total bullshit and b) the latter is OK. as stated before, I'm not a lawyer...nor do I know international law that much, to correct that statements & agreements... but I'm sure everything said here, goes on some meeting & is suggested to IBM's lawyers! ![]() |

Just noticed that Microsoft get away with this wording (from an email "Updates to our terms of use and privacy statement" regarding Skype). This bears repeating. All WCG has to do is adopt this Microsoft verbiage. There is no legal need to ban minors, period. If you are a parent or guardian, you are responsible for your child’s or teenager’s use of Microsoft products and services, including purchases. and a detailed paragraph startingBy signing up, you represent that you have either reached the age of "majority" where you live or have valid parent or legal guardian consent to be bound by these Terms. Can WCG do the same?I'm sure everything said here, goes on some meeting & is suggested to IBM's lawyers! Microsoft also does business worldwide, same as WCG, and Microsoft's lawyers came up with a much better approach for its users who happen to be minors! Microsoft's lawyers are apparently waaaay smarter than IBM/WCG's... ![]() |

I don't know if you have noticed: my second PC had recently a new hard disk, an order of magnitude bigger than before.

It would appear MSFT, and other corporations are taking a measured "business risk" whereas IBM/WCG has no such appetite especially when you consider this is not an operation that creates direct revenue for IBM/WCG. |

It is not too onerous to ask a parent or guardian to set up and monitor a account for minors. Most parents would be thrilled to see their children helping here.

"Rise from your grave and contribute to the grid..."
*cough* or... something like that. I just had two thoughts on this. First, the danger of accounts being purged unnecessarily seems minimal given that I just started turning in results for the first time in about five years. Second, it occurs to me that Kerstaad's approach is a very good way to address the age concerns. |
