This exception applies to all World Community Grid members between the ages of 13 and 18 who registered before July 18, 2016. Well... guess I'm keeping my hiatus, then. Fix this stupid limitation, please; I'll be paciently waiting to join WCG back until then. ![]() Want to have an image of yourself like this on? Fix this stupid limitation, please; I'll be paciently waiting to join WCG back until then. This change to the terms of service is exactly why I'm leaving WCG. The lack of decent security is why I'm never coming back. Seriously, this is the only BOINC project that doesn't allow special characters like $ and @ in the account password. Not to mention there's no server stat page, so you never know if a project is out of work, or if you messed something up. On to Rosetta and Einstein I go. At least they appreciate minors volunteering their gaming PCs and Android smartphones. |

I understand your frustrations but would like to remind everyone why we introduced the new policy regarding volunteers' ages. The End User agreement is intended to lay out the rights and responsibilities of both parties, i.e. this is to set volunteers' expectations and protect their rights, as well as IBM's.
There is no globally universal laws that govern entering into contract with minors. What this means in practice is that if we ever disregard any of our responsibilities laid out in the agreement (e.g. about how we handle your email addresses), then under 18 volunteers in some countries would have no recourse - because the agreement wouldn't be enforceable for them and therefore cannot protect them. We will continue to monitor the laws around this, as they are constantly changing. |

So it's classic Vietnam War logic, then: "We had to destroy the village in order to save it!"There is no globally universal laws that govern entering into contract with minors. I really hate to say this, but if you are under 18 and you never mention anything about it, nobody will probably ever bother you. For one thing: How are they going to find out your age ? My other guess is that there are probably quite a number of under 18 crunchers who probably never read the forums and who will remain blissfully ignorant of these rules and will continue to crunch. I am not advocating breaking the rules, but believe that for the most part, the rules are basically unenforceable unless a person wishes to brazenly proclaim their age ( and how would we know they are being truthful anyway ?) Besides which telling people your age over the internet is not the brightest thing to do anyhow. I do understand WCG needs to cover it legal liabilities in many countries around the world and they did what they believe to be the prudent thing to do. Somehow I do not think they are going to try to determine who the under 18 crowd is and hunt them down and kick them off the project. They really have better things to do.

You really need to change & give them a 3 or 6 months period to get permission from parents! Remember, they are also underage...so need to be "under guidance". I really hate to say this, but if you are under 18 and you never mention anything about it, nobody will probably ever bother you. For one thing: How are they going to find out your age ? Cheers Only way to do it is to implement the birthday input into WCG & that WE ALL need to put it in before the some exact date (lets say within a 3 months)...all the accounts without birthdays need to be "put inactive" until they enter their birthday & they need to certify that with ID or passport ('cause they imputed it too late)! Any change of birthday need to be certified by a photo of a valid ID or passport to WCG email. If someone's enters wrong date, it's their breach of contract/agreement on WCG...yes, someone might lie, but it's their lie - not WCG's! Also, it will give a chance for WCG to make "birthday mails" for sending to all members on their birthday! ![]() |

Just noticed that Microsoft get away with this wording (from an email "Updates to our terms of use and privacy statement" regarding Skype). This bears repeating. All WCG has to do is adopt this Microsoft verbiage. There is no legal need to ban minors, period. If you are a parent or guardian, you are responsible for your child’s or teenager’s use of Microsoft products and services, including purchases. and a detailed paragraph startingBy signing up, you represent that you have either reached the age of "majority" where you live or have valid parent or legal guardian consent to be bound by these Terms. Can WCG do the same? |

So anyone joining has to be 18 or more...anyone under 18 still has to have parents guidance! ![]() |

Perhaps you don't quite understand the difference between banning minors (an unconditional rejection) and asking them if they have parent or guardian consent, but I can assure you that pretty much everyone under 18 sees a yuuuge difference & thinks that a) the former is total bullshit and b) the latter is OK.
