"World Community Grid members must be 18 years of age or older in order to join World Community Grid." Why? I mean, I joined in March of 2009 and I was 14 years old at that time... It's not like there is dangerous content at WCG. (And if there is, i.e on the forums, the admins seem to be very active on that issue). I'm 16. Does this change mean I can no longer contribute to WCG on the computer, phone, and tablet that I purchased and willingly attached to the project? I think you're fantastic for getting involved so young. I think it reflects an early love of science and a desire to be contributors to society. These are great traits to have. I think this is exactly what IBM should be encouraging. You might become inspired to become research scientists..... maybe even at IBM. If you're old enough to have a social media account then I think you're more than old enough to have an account here. This needs to be considered sensibly and it seems like it may not have been. An age limit of over 18 does not make any sense at all to me..... If this proves to be a sticking point give your account to an older relative and ask them to supervise you ![]() Thanks! I'll probably get my parents to "supervise" me. I've been contributing since 2014 when my Uncle introduced me to BOINC. I saw it running on his computer, and he helped me set it up on mine. I think it's an amazing concept to donate computer time, especially when a lot of computers are left on all day. |

So I know you've made changes to the docs. Would it be too much to ask for a markup of the changes from the previous version so they can be reviewed? faldor, the changes made were quite drastic (we hadn't reviewed and updated our previous terms in quite a while), which would make any marked up version not quite helpful. |

To put a little more wood on the fire: does the new age restriction means that the girl used in the official WCG trailer is a 18y high school student? Else, video has to be taken down, for it no longer agrees with the guidelines.

Good find imakuni. Her parents probably pay for the electricity and she presumably has their permission and support.

Question: If a person simply stops participating and does not give written notice, at what point in time if or will IBM/WCG deactivate the user account? Several months? Years? RaymondFO, we haven't yet defined an exact time limit but it would be in the magnitude of years and certainly not weeks or months. does the new age restriction means that the girl used in the official WCG trailer is a 18y high school student? Else, video has to be taken down, for it no longer agrees with the guidelines. imakuni and others who have asked similar questions - we are currently working with our legal folks on an exception process to allow existing volunteers who are under 18 years of age to continue participating. |

"Legal folks? " You're kidding, right? It's not that hard to allow people to sign up for an account, you've already been doing it for years. You could just follow Google and Facebook and lower the age limit to 13. At any rate, nobody reads the ToS anyway, especially kids. I've "agreed" to so many things, Google probably owns my firstborn son by now. |

When I joined WCG, I was 14; been a member ever since. I guess my computing power was needed at the time, though not anymore, it seems. You guys better sort this out: either remove the age restriction or follow the 13y rule. I'll be taking a permanent vacation until then. ![]() Want to have an image of yourself like this on? They said that they were reviewing it (as they should*) and I most certainly haven't seen anybody kicking you off nor anybody telling you to take a hike. It obvious that you're here for the altruistic volunteering of your computer(s) free cycles. Keep it up, your computing power is still needed. * everybody knows that these disclaimers have to exist thanks to the absolutely ridiculous law suits that can happen. Seriously ? Where did you take the offense? Somewhere around the "allow existing volunteers under 18 to continue participating." The wording of the post and the new terms of service sounds like WCG wants all us minors to **** off and leave the world's problems to the grown-ups. In all seriousness, what other reason would there be for an age limit? To keep a 12-year-old from suing WCG for doing exactly what it said it does? |

Apologies if my post offended anyone - that clearly wasn't the intention. Let me try to clarify: every contribution of computing power helps our research partners get closer to the answers. This isn't about discriminating against minors or unwelcoming their contribution, which we value so much. In fact in the last year alone, we worked with several high schools in the US and Europe to raise awareness of World Community Grid and get students involved. We see World Community Grid not just as a way for anyone to contribute to scientific discovery, but also a tool for learning and getting excited about science.
However, following a thorough and lengthy review of our previous terms of use, our lawyers deemed it necessary to introduce the new age restriction. This is a global program and in many countries around the world, 18 is considered to be the age at which an individual can enter into a legally binding contract. We understand that the new rule isn't fair to our existing volunteers who are not yet 18 years of age. Which is why, as I mentioned in my previous post, we're working with our lawyers on an exception process under which existing under-18 volunteers can continue to make their valued contributions to this program. Let me also add this - I'm no legal expert but from what I understand, the law around this is constantly changing in several countries. For example, I believe in the US, some states have relaxed these rules, while others have tightened them. We will continue to monitor the legal situation closely as we would love to be able to lower that minimum age. |
