Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

Win 7 I understand but ubuntu 16 ??

Is there a particular requirement ?

Just thinking it is widely used but not as windows user friendly as some

We made a deal with students for a donation:
- you get a FREE Microsoft code for students (adademic), we install that Win & deliver the "Plug-n-Play" computer for you!
- you don't get a certified Windows, we put Linux there...Ubuntu is just our choice!

Is there a more user friendly Linux there?
wink

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

Linux Mint interface is a lot closer to Windows UI than Ubuntu.
Also lighter than Ubuntu.

I have this working @16 threads..... could post after Thor challenge if of interest to anyone. 16t and maybe 9000 boinc per day. (less if you want to power save)

Agreed. I use the Mint MATE desktop (I have heard that Cinnamon is not as good). Very light weight, and runs great on a laptop from 2008. It is basically just a cruncher at this point though.

Spring vacuuming...going from 75° to 70°C after dust is moved! ;)

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

Not bad to drop 5C just by cleaning out some dust. I am planning on cleaning mine out this week. We haven't had much of a winter on the east coast of the US, so it's hard to think of as "spring cleaning".

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

So this weekend, after some high temp in Zagreb, Croatia, decided to do some work on computers as Tthrottle did slow down the computers quite a bit.

So what I did:
1. for VS4
- got a new HDD, expanded RAID10 & the volume
- got new cooler 92x92mm...Zalman ZM-F2 FOB (SF), which is extremely quiet & got fixture with Silicone PINS
2. my Win10 mbo wouldn't power up od DG35DG...if you have some info & know about BIOS, please do help out here. So what I did is:
- relocated from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS system to Win 10 system (same DG35DG board): video card, HDD, CPU, PSU...powered up WIn10 & it's running right now! Unfortunately still have questions why Q9550S won't work with Win10, while almost same processor X3360 works. If you have some input, please do it here.
- had another case I was building up for some other project with DG33FB in which I've put all the parts from Ubuntu 16.04 (HDD, video card, CPU, PSU) & powered up
Now I've got 2 similar systems to compare the crunching on Ubuntu 14.04 & 16.04 OS: both with same Q9400S on same intel DG33FB board, same WDC 160GB HDD, 4GB (actually 14.04 has a 2x2GB. while 16.04 got a 4x1GB) & different video cards (730GT vs 240GT).
So I'm back at full speed for crunching.

Hope you also had a nice weekend? wink

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

I am preparing to build a Ryzen 7 1700 system later this week once all the parts arrive. This will be by far my most powerful machine. Running a distant second is the FX-8370E system I built a couple years ago, followed by a 10 year old laptop. I think my android phones produce more work than that laptop, time to retire it.

The 1700 system will have:
ASUS Strix B350F mobo
2x16GB DDR4 2400 RAM (leaving two more slots to max it at 64GB eventually)
500GB m2 SSD boot drive
2 Seagate 2TB platter drives for storage in mirror (this will be where BOINC gets installed and data is kept)
750W 80+Gold fully modular psu
Noctua case fans and cpu cooler <-- I have been very impressed with the quality of noctua products.
Win10 home
I am yet to order a GPU, simply because the mobo I ordered has onboard display port and hdmi. I don't do any gaming right now. If I do order dedicated graphics, it will likely be a lower end gtx1050 or similar.

Most of the products I purchased were either on sale, had rebates, or both.

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

joneill003,

Nice system, but the onboard video ports won't function with a Ryzen CPU,as they have no onboard graphics. Those ports are for last-gen and upcoming APUs.
