Upgrading an older Dell Dimension PC

I have a Dell Dimension system in a tower case which I purchased prior to 2010. The system still works great. The only part that I needed to replace over the years is the power supply.

I am using this system as a cruncher for the World Community Grid. I installed a Nividia Geoforce GTX 750 Ti video card into it so I could also use it as a cruncher for the GPUGRID project.

Question: As the components in this system are still functioning well, I see no point in throwing this system in the landfill. The Intel 8200 CPU is a quad core but is not hyper-threaded so it only does 4 WCG work units at a time.

Can anyone suggest a good hyper-threaded CPU/M.B. combo that I could install in this system and extend its life as a cruncher?

Re: Upgrading an older Dell Dimension PC

Intel Q8200 is a quad core processor with no hyper-threading. If you are looking for the ability to run more than 4 units together, look for Intel i7 (quad-core w/HT) or AMD FX-8xxx (8-core) combos.

If you post system specs (cpu, ram, hdd, os), maybe we could recommend other options.

  • i5-7400 (Kaby Lake, 4C/4T) @ 3.0 GHz
  • i5-4590 (Haswell, 4C/4T) @ 3.3 GHz
  • i5-3330 (Ivy Bridge, 4C/4T) @ 3.0 GHz

Re: Upgrading an older Dell Dimension PC

The socket should be LGA775.

I did a quick search and there isn't anything much faster than what he already has. Plus, those not much faster CPU's are old and not very efficient by today's standards.

If you want to go with AMD, you have the FX-6300 ( http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B009O7YORK?ke...mp;ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1 ) which would crunch 6 tasks or the FX-8350 ( http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B009O7YUF6?ke...mp;ref_=sr_1_2&sr=8-2 ) which would crunch 8 tasks. Motherboard, for either of those CPU's, http://www.amazon.ca/Gigabyte-GA-78LMT-USB3-D...1&keywords=AMD+Am3%2B
Instead of the FX-8350 which is clocked at 4 GHZ, you can get the FX-8320 which is clocked at 3.5 GHZ and costs CDN$ 34 less ( http://www.amazon.ca/Amd-Fx-8320-125-16mb-350...fRID=00Q2DMV1AW87YT4S1J15 )

You can also wait for 2016 for AMD's new CPU core "Zen" which is supposed to bring 40-50% better performance over the CPU's I've mentioned.

If you want to go Intel, wait for someone who knows more about that :)

Re: Upgrading an older Dell Dimension PC

Hi

I really appreciate and THANK YOU for your assistance in this matter.

It is a Dell Studio Desktop D540 (Late 2008)

Service Tag: 2P8NLJ1 | Express Service Code: 5879756989

If you goto http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/pro...J1/configuration?detect=y

It should provide you with the configuration of this system.

The CPU is an Intel 8200 Quad core but it is not hyper-threaded so it only does 4 WUs at a time.

It has 8 megs of RAM.

I thought I would prolong the life of this system by dropping in a more current M.B. with an Intel i7 processor. The other option would be to do nothing and continue to use it as a cruncher until it craps out.

Re: Upgrading an older Dell Dimension PC

The Dell Studio D540 is fitted with DDR2 memory. Most newer motherboards require DDR3 memory. http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/studio-540

The highest CPU available for your machine is a Q9650 (3.0ghz). They go for $70-80 on ebay.
http://ark.intel.com/products/35428/Intel-Cor...che-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB

Your current Dell Windows Vista Home Premium license is tied to your current hardware and can not be used with a new motherboard. You may want to consider the free Windows 10 upgrade coming later this month.

Personally, I would do nothing and continue to use it until it craps out.
Or, sell it locally and use the Nvidia 750ti in another build.

Re: Upgrading an older Dell Dimension PC

on here is probably your board:
http://www.amazon.com/MOTHERBOARD-STUDIO-Mini-Tower-Systems-M017G/dp/B003F8MTDK

so for intel G45 here is a list of procs:
http://ark.intel.com/products/35132/Intel-82G...roller-Hub#@compatibility

u will get 3x times more L2 cache, so that would speed up processing...with also 2,33GHz -> 3GHz, @ d expense of same 95W per CPU:
http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core2-Quad-Q9650-vs-Intel-Core2-Quad-Q8200

no HT possible! :/

Re: Upgrading an older Dell Dimension PC

Personally I think you should wait a while to see new AMD/Intel CPU's and then make your choice. Even if only for prices to go down for current CPU's/motherboards/DDR3 RAM.

Re: Upgrading an older Dell Dimension PC

Thank you Agrfan for you information in this matter.

I have been using Win 7 on this PC for many years. I found MS Vista to be a very buggy OS.

Looked at the specs of the CPU you had mentioned and found it is not hyper-threaded so it does not fulfill my needs.

I am going to do nothing in regards to upgrading this PC. Use it until it craps out. It does not owe me anything.

Remove the Nvidia V.C. when the PC dies and reinstall the V.C. in a newer PC.

Thanks again for your help.
