Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

finally had time on a sick-leave day (as soon as I felt better) to upgrade that T7250 to T7700, that's about 30% better in performance!

next are some GPUs on their way...so nothing for WCG, but sthg for SETi@home!

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

@KliK

I've seen you have many dual core computers crunching. Are those all dedicated crunchers or are they part of that charity you're linking to, Play4Life? Are you running that charity?

I'm running that charity...we're promoting BOINC in Croatia, developing some small grids here & donating computer equipment to poor students to keep them in science!
wink

p.s. Sorry for the late reply, have seen the post just now!

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

installed a big fan-less heat-sink on Quadro 1700 & installed it in a computer...moderate engineering!
it added 88GFlops to my grid computing network with only 32cores! a nice thing that works just fine on SETi@home (Beta currently)...

but installing a drivers to make it work in Ubuntu & setting up a desktop...that was some advanced thing to do, for a Win-user guy...

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

Quadros are big $$$, aren't they? I vaguely remember researching them a while back and they were powerful, but expensive, like the telsa cards.

My home desktop computer that I built last year only has a cheap nvidia GPU (8 or 16 cuda cores IIRC). I didn't bother to put a high end card in there because wcg doesnt have any gpu projects right now. I know there are other projects, but wcg is where my heart is.

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

Cleaned both my rigs out. Some serious dust built up. One is a dual X5670 xeon (Two 6 core/12 threads) and a i7 4930K (6 core/12 threads). If I could win that big powerball, my basement will become one serious server farm! These new cases are almost screwdriver free.

they were expansive...but not anymore - at least that 1700 wasn't!
it's only 32 CUDA cores... wink

now I've made a deal to buy a Quadro 600 for sthg like $20!

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

just ordered Q9550S, as a replacement for a power hungry X3360! wink
until that time, a computer got an old 8500GT with setup to be used on SETi@home...

assembled a new computer over the weekend...but didn't find a way for Debian to use hardware RAID - it might took some time 'cause I'm not proficient on Linux...if it was Ubuntu, it'd be online & running...
it might took some time, but looking forward to learning more about Linux environment!
cool

EDIT:
also, acquired a R.Pi Zero...so looking forward of playing also with that little monster! Just don't know on which project it will go?!

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

Got myself a little treat yesterday, 1050Ti which runs 24/7 here , as WCG doesn't have CUDA or OpenCL project!
wink

Also, a new fan for good old T60 came...so it's also back online!
cool

& build 2 computers for a donation with a non-profit org. that I run, so check us today Play4Life. One on Win7, other on Ubuntu 16 - just finishing papers for a donation.

Re: Making stuff work with your own hands!

Win 7 I understand but ubuntu 16 ??

Is there a particular requirement ?

Just thinking it is widely used but not as windows user friendly as some
