Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

One way to do it is to have an area in the banner that randomly lists people and their milestones for the past few weeks.

OK, good. A specific answer, one which I happen to like too. Anybody got any more ?
Cheers

Hello Sgt. Joe,

These were my ideas from way back in the start of the post:

As a small thing that might keep long-term users I was thinking of is that maybe the main WCG website would include something like the top users/teams on its webpage and a number of users. This would at least make the people that like the points aspect feel rewarded. I noticed that with a lot of BOINC projects that they do have something like that, and although it might not do much it can at least show that WCG is an active project and show a person who comes across this webpage that there are lot of people working towards research.

Another aspect I feel that needs more work is team awards. Same as we have badges for individual's that donate their cpu's there could be team badges, although their badges would need to be set much higher.

Just throwing it out there from my perspective. Not sure if that is specific enough, but maybe the more experienced crunchers can provide feedback if those are doable.

Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

I just want to point out that I agreed with you in the post immediately following that here . So I wasn't presenting this as an original idea.

In fact when I did this on Free-DC, I had actually gotten the idea from another BOINC site. I think they had an animated box which changed every few seconds to show different names but I thought that would be annoying so I asked Bok to only change the names with each refresh.

The point is that this would take virtually no work on the part of the WCG staff but even after 90 posts, they can't even be bothered to comment - not that this should surprise anyone.

No worries, was not trying to say that you stole anyone's idea.

Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

Looked in google play store and thought 'what is familiar about this logo?' The htc ptg is a rebranded boinc agent for android. The video presented on gps names 5 most recently running wcg projects + seti of dr anderson's, i.e. they advertise to contribute to wcg. Would ibm/wcg not have participated in this program development? cool

There's another topic floating around somewhere that I started regarding this app, at the time none of the WCG projects mentioned were active. I have yet to hear from anyone who has actually used the app, to determine where the work is coming from.

cool Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

btw, this weekend I made 20mil points on WCG...did WCG recognize me for that?
NO!

And you keep asking why people leave?
LoL

They don't get CREDIT for what they've DONE here!

In what form would you like to be recognized ? Would an email congratulating you for your contribution suffice ? A certificate of appreciation ? A coupon for 1/2 off on your next cup of coffee ? A credit towards your electric bill ? A squeezable stress relief toy with the WCG logo ? Please be specific with how you think the accomplishment of particular goals should be recognized, either to you privately or to the world publicly.

BTW you have my admiration for crunching well done.
Cheers

An email would suffice for NOW...but I'll be still here...I'm just talking about some "special emails to the crunchers" for their accomplishments!

What accomplishments?
Have suggested it earlier: https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=464274

The important thing is: IT'S FREE!

Secondly, I would like that someone in WCG starts making some app, so we can have PUBLIC RECOGNITIONS (to whoever wants it to enable it) on linked accounts (not Facebook, on: tweeter, intagram with logos/pics, tumbler, LinkedIn, etc.)...so that friends can ask me: what is that WCG that keeps posting on your profile? Can I join?
And it's ALSO FREE!

Also, to add to this idea!

If we post MILESTONES, then not only the BEST & HIGH RANKING users will be posted...that is NICE idea! EVERY MILESTONE gets RECOGNIZED...and everybody is happy!

Another one is the "+change%": to list the highest change in CPUtime/points/results within last week/month/quarter/year with listed %...that way we can RECOGNIZE the ones that upgrade their equipment more...and that are on a verge of being on a new MILESTONE...
example: someone makes 10 000points in a week, adds one more computer and makes 5000points more...that is a change of 50%!
example2: someon makes 50 000 points in a week...adds similar computer and makes 10% gain...
etc.

Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

As people like the badges and as I like seeing how many WUs are completed, possibly combine the two ideas in a "This week" or "Badges" tab. It would mentioned each active project and how many WUs/run times they got for the week, quick links if there was an official update for that project, and then list everyone who got a 100 year badge, 50 year, 20, 10, 5, 2, 1, 180 day...14 days in that order. There are something like 500,000 people who have contributed and there are a number of active people. It can be a way to show just how active and how massive the community is.

It is public and gets usernames on the page without someone posting to a forum. At this point the only way people show their badges is if they post in the forums.

This could be a way they are given credit regardless of postings, and it can show "wow, look at all the people that got a XYZ badge this week. You know, I'm only # time away from that myself and then my profile name gets up there as well."

Other quick ideas:
-ability to send private messages to each other within the forums
-dashboard (again shows people the progress and the work completed/left)

Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

Since Seoulpowergrid started using bullet points maybe we can put the most popular ideas on a bullet point and update those. It would be easier to read and update and also would provide a easy to read actions that we would like done if we any from WCG admins would review this forum.

for example:

1) ect
2) ect
3) ect

Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

I don't think we'll be hearing from anyone from WCG, at least not any constructive way. If they show up at all it will just be to tell us that they don't have any plans to do squat. So I don't see the point of doing any extra work, but anyone who wishes to is certainly free to do so.

I just want to reinforce the point Klik has made a couple times about social media. If at some point we can somehow persuade WCG to make the minimal expenditure of effort needed to recognize people's milestones, we at least need to send those to a twitter account so that people who are interested can follow that account and retweet them.

Facebook would also be a good avenue but that seems closed to us and I'm not familiar enough with it or other social media to make any suggestions but I'm sure that once we have the basic logic in place for something like this, we can find other social media outlets for it.

Getting people to ask about WCG is the best way to inspire interest. It's always better to have them come to you rather than the other way around.

Hello twilyth,

Yes it might be a case that I am naive since I am newly joined member that there would probably be no action, however I also think that it is easier for the WCG staff to ignore your and other points if all we have is 10 pages that they have to shift through and then pick out one lines of things we want to make WCG better. I also know that you have made several points on this in previous points as well.

The only thing I am trying to do is if we have an idea of how to keep long-term crunchers then we might as well put it into a concise presentation (aka bullet points) showing that we are in agreement and this is what we demand as contributors to WCG, since we are the ones who provide the raw power that is then refined and sharpened by the expertise of the scientists. That is why if we have a consolidated and single example of what we want it is harder to ignore.

As for my idea I was thinking of writing something along the lines of a list of Demands for WCG. I have put together a small list of what I could find from the previous posts. Please excuse me if I did not give where credit is due, but I tried to copy the posts and the users that have made it and give credit where credit is due.

Please let me know if I am not on the right track with my thoughts on this.

Any further additions can be made by other members with a new tag "List of Demands vX.X"

List of Demand v1.0:

Seoulpowergrid
-ability to send private messages to each other within the forums
-dashboard (again shows people the progress and the work to be completed)

KLiK
-Ability to recognize member based on a change of cpu power donated. (Ex: someone who upgrades their equipment and now provides a 50% more output).
-"In a few days I will be reaching 20 mil points (if not today)...if my FB account could be linked to WCG site, then WCG could get a FREE commercial on a FB over my profile...with also a link to "join Luka's team on this link"...
but I will get credit only here, not publicly...and my friends couldn't like/comment on that post!"
-Have a milestone setup that is avaliable on Facebook:
*every CPU year
* every year of membership
* every points milestones (1k, 2k, 5k, 10k, 20k, 50k, 100k, 250k, 500k, 1M, 2M, 5M, 10M, 20M, 50M, 100M, 200M, 500M, 1B, 2B, 5B, 10B, 20B, 50B, 100B, etc.),
* weekly/monthly/quarterly/half year/year reports (example: in last month Luka donated X of CPU h to computing for better future of mankind & world free of disease like AIDS, cancer, etc...find out more on Luka's profile on WCG, link...)
* project milestones (BADGES), like we got here...example: Luka just got a emerald badge for donating 2years of CPU time for the project XY, link. if you want to join Luka's team here is the link.
* returned X results, hwre X is: 1st, 2nd, 5th, 10th, 20th, 50th, 100th, 200th, 500th, 1k, 2k, 5k, 10k, 20k, 50k, 100k, 500k, 1M, 2M, 5M, etc... (example: Luka just returned his 1st result for participating in the research for project CEP2, find more about the project on link. If you want to join Luka, join here - link.)
* World rank, for places: 1st, 2nd, 5th, 10th, 20th, 50th, 100th, 200th, 500th, 1k, 2k, 5k, 10k, 20k, 50k, 100k, 500k, 1M, 2M, 5M, etc... example: Luka just ranked 100.000th in the World for participating in WCG, find out more on link. Join him & beat him, here!
* Country rank: Luka just ranked 10th in Croatia for participating in WCG, find out more on link. Join him & beat him here!
* research development posts (example: Luka has donated X of CPU hours for computing data for project FightAIDS@home. His donation got scientist to develop this data & conclusions, link. Find out more on this projects and join Luka's team on, link)
etc.

Vlado101
-main website to include window that shows top users/teams
-main website to show number of active users (users who make contribution, not just that have an account).
-Introduction of team awards.

Twilyth
-One way to do it is to have an area in the banner that randomly lists people and their milestones for the past few weeks.

Doneske
-I would like to suggest they update the badges so that one could be achieved every 5 years of run time. Going from 10 to 20 years and especially from 20 to 50 or 50 to 100 is almost not achievable for those who might only have 4 or fewer cores contributing. They could still highlight those milestones by a different color of badge for 20, 50, 100 years. You have to remember, badges are on a per project basis not overall runtime. The main thing is to feel like you've accomplished something and it shouldn't take years.
