Staying power of HIV-fighting enzyme figured out

"Biochemists have figured out what is needed to activate and sustain the virus-fighting activity of an enzyme found in CD4+ T cells, the human immune cells infected by HIV. The discovery could launch a more effective strategy for preventing the spread of HIV."

Drinking, even casual amounts, poses much greater risk for advanced liver disease in HIV/hepatitis C patients

"There is a much stronger association between alcohol use and advanced liver fibrosis in co-infected patients compared to uninfected, research has demonstrated. Even light ("nonhazardous") drinking -- which typically poses a relatively low risk for uninfected persons -- was linked to an increased risk of liver fibrosis in the co-infected group of study participants."

1- Soy sauce molecule may unlock drug therapy for HIV patients

"For HIV patients being treated with anti-AIDS medications, resistance to drug therapy regimens is commonplace. Often, patients develop resistance to first-line drug therapies, such as Tenofovir, and are forced to adopt more potent medications. Virologists now are testing the next generation of medications that stop HIV from spreading, and are using a molecule related to flavor enhancers found in soy sauce, to develop compounds that are more potent than Tenofovir."

2- Tracking proteins in single HIV particle

"A new technique to examine how proteins interact with each other at the level of a single HIV viral particle has been developed by an interdisciplinary team of scientists. The technique allows scientists to study the life-threatening virus in detail and makes screening potential anti-HIV drugs quicker and more efficient. The technique can also be used to study other diseases."

@jochrupp
@lavaflow
Sorry for the delay in my response, but I wasn't at home for ten days.
I created this thread because I intend to publish a large number of news and I don't want to pollute the thread entitled "Interesting news articles about AIDS".

1- HIV-positive children more likely to develop drug resistance

"74 percent of HIV-positive children in a study developed resistance to at least one form of drug treatment. The researchers followed almost 450 children enrolled in the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study, one of the largest studies of HIV-positive children in the United States. "The problem with drug resistance is that once you develop it, it never goes away," said the principal investigator. "Some patients with very resistant virus have no effective treatment options. Resistant virus is the major reason for death among youth with perinatal HIV"."

2- Dolutegravir in HIV-1 infection: Added benefit in adult patients

"Adults without pretreatment and adults with pretreatment for whom an integrase inhibitor is mandatory have fewer side effects under dolutegravir than under the comparator therapy. No added benefit could be determined for pretreated adults who do not require INIs (i. e. in whom no integrase inhibitor is indicated) and for adolescents above 12 years of age, because there were no study data."

Barriers to HIV testing in older children

"Concerns about guardianship and privacy can discourage clinics from testing children for HIV, according to new research from Zimbabwe. The results of the study provide much-needed information on how to improve care of this vulnerable population."
