Anti-cancer drug kicks HIV out of hiding
----------------------------------------"An anti-cancer drug can activate hidden HIV, a pilot study by HIV researchers has shown. The researchers found that the anti-cancer drug romidepsin increased the virus production in HIV-infected cells between 2.1 and 3.9 times above normal and that the viral load in the blood increased to measurable levels in five out of six patients with HIV infection." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/07/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 |

Linking microbial, immune environment in semen to HIV viral load, transmission
----------------------------------------"HIV infection re-shapes the relationship between semen bacteria and immune factors which in turn affects viral load, suggesting that the semen microbiome plays a role in sexual transmission of HIV, researchers report. While HIV is found in many body fluids, sexual transmission through semen is the most common route of infection." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/07/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 |

Forced mutations doom HIV: How potential HIV drug exacts its toll on viral populations
----------------------------------------"Fifteen years ago, medical researchers had a novel idea for an HIV drug. They thought if they could induce the virus to mutate uncontrollably, they could force it to weaken and eventually die out -- a strategy that our immune system uses against many viruses." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/07/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 |

1- Scientists call for new strategy in pursuit of HIV-free generation
----------------------------------------"In light of the recent news that HIV has been detected in the Mississippi baby previously thought to have been cured of the disease, researchers are assessing how to help those born to HIV-infected mothers. These infants around the world are in need of new immune-based protective strategies, including vaccines delivered to mothers and babies and the means to boost potentially protective maternal antibodies, say researchers." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/07/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 2- Dissolvable fabric loaded with medicine might offer faster protection against HIV "Bioengineers have discovered a potentially faster way to deliver a topical drug that protects women from contracting HIV. Their method spins the drug into silk-like fibers that quickly dissolve when in contact with moisture, releasing higher doses of the drug than possible with other topical materials." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/07/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 |

Intimacy a strong motivator for PrEP HIV prevention
----------------------------------------"Many HIV-negative gay or bisexual men in steady relationships with other HIV-negative men don't always use condoms out of a desire for intimacy. That same desire, according to a new study, makes such men more inclined to use antiretroviral medications to prevent getting HIV, a recommended practice known as PrEP." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 |

Fungus deadly to AIDS patients found to grow on trees
----------------------------------------"Researchers have pinpointed the environmental source of fungal infections that have been sickening HIV/AIDS patients in Southern California for decades. It literally grows on trees. The discovery is based on the science project of a 13-year-old girl, who spent the summer gathering soil and tree samples from areas around Los Angeles hardest hit by infections of the fungus named Cryptococcus gattii (CRIP-to-cock-us GAT-ee-eye)." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 |

1- Dosage of HIV drug may be ineffective for half of African-Americans
----------------------------------------"Many African-Americans may not be getting effective doses of the HIV drug maraviroc because they are more likely than European-Americans to inherit functional copies of a protein that speeds the removal of the drug from the body." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 2- HIV antibodies block infection by reservoir-derived virus in laboratory study "A laboratory study lends further weight to the potential effectiveness of passive immunotherapy to suppress HIV in the absence of drug treatment. Passive immunotherapy for HIV is an experimental strategy that involves periodically administering broadly neutralizing HIV-specific antibodies (bNAbs) to control the virus." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 |

HIV Lessons from the Mississippi Baby
----------------------------------------"The news in July, 2014 that HIV had returned in a Mississippi toddler after a two-year treatment-free remission dashed the hopes of clinicians, HIV researchers and the public at large tantalized by the possibility of a cure. But a new commentary by two leading HIV experts argues that despite its disappointing outcome, the Mississippi case and two other recent HIV “rebounds” in adults, have yielded critical lessons about the virus’ most perplexing — and maddening — feature: its ability to form cure-defying viral hideouts." http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/08/...ily%3A+Top+Health+News%29 |
