People with HIV with early-stage cancers are up to four times more likely to go untreated for cancer

"People with HIV who are diagnosed with cancer are two to four times more likely to go untreated for their cancer compared to uninfected cancer patients, according to a new, large retrospective study. Life expectancy for HIV-infected people is now similar to uninfected people, but survival for HIV patients who develop cancer is not. While many studies have attempted to understand why HIV-infected cancer patients have worse outcomes, the new study examined differences in cancer treatment as one potential explanation."

Aspirations and sex: Coming of age in the eye of the HIV storm

"How do you shape your hopes, ambitions and expectations when growing up in an environment devastated by HIV/AIDS? One researcher found that young people between 16 and 25 in rural Kenya take a pragmatic approach to sexual risks because sexuality plays an important role in their quest for a better future. Anthropologists have an important role to play in prevention projects that take expectations of youngsters better into account."

Safer, cheaper building blocks for future anti-HIV and cancer drugs

"Researchers have developed an economical, reliable and heavy metal-free chemical reaction that yields fully functional 1,2,3-triazoles. Triazoles are chemical compounds that can be used as building blocks for more complex chemical compounds, including pharmaceutical drugs."

Novel intravaginal ring shows promise for HIV prevention

"A novel intravaginal ring implanted with anti-retroviral drug tablets, or pods, demonstrated sustained and controlled drug release and safety over 28 days, according to a study. The ring, designed to prevent transmission of HIV, was tested in pig-tailed macaque monkeys, and is engineered to be inexpensive, all the better for use in developing countries, says a corresponding author."

Racial/ethnic disparities in HIV medical studies examined by researchers

"Social/behavioral intervention vastly increased the number of African American and Latino individuals living with HIV/AIDS who enrolled in HIV/AIDS medical studies, a study has found. Nine out of 10 participants who were found eligible for studies decided to enroll, compared to zero participants among a control group."

HIV study leads to insights into deadly infection

"New insights into how the HIV virus greatly boosts its chances of spreading infection has been gained by research that also indicates why HIV is so hard to combat. "We now have a better understanding of the role of these protein enhancers in HIV infection. However, it's clear that much more research is needed in this area," one researcher says."

'Expressive therapy' intervention assists women living with HIV

"An 'expressive therapy' group intervention helps women living with HIV disclose their health status and improves their social support, self-efficacy and the safety and quality of their relationships, a study has shown. "Medication alone is totally insufficient," said the study's first author. "Over 90 percent of our patients are on effective antiretroviral therapy but far too many are dying from suicide, addiction, and violence. Depression, addiction, and especially trauma are very common and often devastating for women living with HIV but are not being effectively addressed by most clinics."."

Window of opportunity against HIV comes from 'fitness bottleneck'

"New research on HIV transmission among heterosexual couples in Zambia shows that viral fitness is an important basis of a 'genetic bottleneck' imposed every time a new person is infected. The findings define a window of opportunity for drugs or vaccines to prevent or limit infection. HIV represents evolution on overdrive. Every infected individual contains a swarm of viruses that exhibit variability in their RNA sequence, and new mutations are constantly appearing. Yet nearly every time someone new is infected, this diverse population of viruses gets squeezed down to just one individual."
