Future changes to FA@H Vina

Vinbeer, It is technically not at full speed, but within the next week we will be doing some changes to the work units and project weights. By this I mean we are going to reduce the size of the work units for FA@H-Vina and increase the MCM1 application weight to have it's runtime be more evenly split.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

The above post was placed in the MCM forum.

Can you expand on the plan for the reduction of workunit size, please? Is this to try and get around the issue of long run times with long times between checkpoints? More checkpoints?

I know from my i7 2.8ghz, I can get Vina jobs take 3 to 12 hours to complete which can be a real pain on the long jobs given the number of jobs is between 2 and 4 meaning it is only checkpointing after completing a job. I've seen several with a checkpoint time of around 5hrs so I have had to remove this project from the machine I do not have direct control over. The reason being that machine is rarely on for more than a couple of hours in a day meaning there is a real chance of the unit not being returned and wasting time/power/money.

Thanking you kindly! smile

Re: Future changes to FA@H Vina

Genhos,

The change in size of FA@H-Vina work units is not going to change the checkpoint intervals at a job level. What this will do is decrease the overall average runtime for these workunits. This means that if the grid is averaging 5 hours per work unit, we decreasing them to about 4 hours per work unit. This may mean that your 3 to 12 hours to go to 2.5 to 10 hours for example.

Thanks,
-Uplinger

Thanks for the reply, Uplinger.

As there is no change in checkpoint interval, I presume that the number of jobs will decrease then? Simplisticly, what was 4 jobs with 4hour checkpoint will be 3 jobs at 4hour checkpoint?
