Dell Poweredge C6100 - 4 x nodes each with 2 x 6 core X5650 (12 threads each) shed loads of RAM and a total of 96 threads!
----------------------------------------Looking forward to playing with this! Delivery should be on Friday...

You've been acquiring some big hardware recently! Sounds like fun.
----------------------------------------I'm interested in your thoughts on a comparison between those X5650 systems and the Opteron system. Let us know when you get it. ![]() |

I'm jealous.
----------------------------------------The only upgrades I'm getting is an A8-5600k based desktop for my brother (I sold his laptop, so in the end the whole PC including LCD monitor and all other parts ends up for 167€, just waiting for HDD from Ebay and CPU\MB\RAM\USB Dongle to arrive from Amazon) and maybe an Athlon 750K plus motherboard that may replace my current Phenom X3 720 and motherboard which, if I sell for 65€, will end up for 35€. Not too bad. Can't really afford more!!! You've been acquiring some big hardware recently! Sounds like fun. Mmmm, never really gave a comparison any thought, so here goes, thinking aloud...I'm interested in your thoughts on a comparison between those X5650 systems and the Opteron system. Let us know when you get it. Opteron Power usage = 590 W/h 4 x Opteron 6274/16 core @ 2.2Ghz 32 Gb ram 64 threads about 125k ppd Ubuntu server 12.x LTS HP Z800 power usage = 340 W/h 2 x X5650/6 core/12 thread @ 3Ghz 24 Gb ram 24 threads not kept any data on ppd Ubuntu 13.04 My guess would be the Opteron system are more power efficient and produce a better PPW ratio than the Z800 system, however, that may not ne the case as I have no data to compare. What the opteron losses in Ghz, it gains in thread count. on the other side what the Z800 losses on thread count it gains on Ghz What are your thoughts?

Haha so do my parents!
----------------------------------------But yeah, electricity is expensive, at least here in Portugal, and it seem it will become cheaper anytime soon (more like the opposite). Hence why I may upgrade to the Athlon: my current PC is using about 180 watts per hour running boinc. I think that it might have a problem since in November it "only" used 145 watts with BOINC. The motherboard was acting crazy the other day... (wouldn't boot\POST till I removed the DVD drive) ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz |

Falconet - sounds like time for an upgrade, when computers 'act crazy' they need binning!

What are your thoughts? I think the performance per CPU (x5650 to 6274) will be about the same. I have a feeling the Intel systems will use less power though. ![]() |

Keep us updated!
----------------------------------------I seem to have fixed my issue: Took out all components and then put them in one by one, and power usage never crossed 74 watts while running BOINC. I then overclocked to 3510MHZ and it is using 91-93 watts while BOINC is running for a total of 120 watts with the monitor on. Not too bad. I am now using an athlon II X2 4450e which was using almost 200 watts the other day... (I took out the phenom a week ago, 266 watts with BOINC was too much) ![]() - AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF 6C/12T 3.2 GHz - 85W - AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W - AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz [Edit 2 times, last edit by Falconet at Feb 6, 2014 11:39:31 AM] |
