Hey I was ahead but didn't take you long to fly by. I'm at 776 as of yesterday. Should have 5,000,000 plus points today though EDIT: Sooooo, for points per watt, what do you suggest for a cheap dual socket build. First off xeon or amd? I kinda want to wait for the new chips coming, but I kind of want to make as many ripples as I can while it lasts. I have a power supply lying around, an unused copy of win 8 (haven't bothered with it) I can get a dvd drive and case easy enuf. I'm just wondering which moboard (dual socket) and CPUs should I get. I've searched and searched I can't tell what's a good deal with SO many choices. Hi Jack, sorry mate missed the edit/question... The E5-xxxxV2 appear to be the way to go as far as chips go, as for mb, I have an EVGA SR-2 which is wasted for crunching as it's got 7 GPU slots and capable of sooo much more than running 2 CPU's for crunching... Choose a CPU by your chosen specification/preference, this site may help then using the same site there is an option to see what mb's the CPU's go with. Be aware of the speed/thread/TDP(watts) as it is often better to reduce the speed (Ghz) rating of the chip to get higher thread count and lower TDP(watts) I wouldn't recommend any particulay CPU, however, I will say this, go for the best the budget will allow! There is one CPU that does 10c/20t and 130TDP that would be my choice! |

The downside is you'll pay a lot more for the system. for points per dollar, AMD is holding its own here, especially if putting together a dual/quad socket system of used parts. The system will cost less but use more electricity than Intel generally speaking. ![]() |

I can only agree, I have always been a big fan of AMD, however, for crunching Intel will win most of the time, with the exception of my 2 x MegaCrunchers (4 x AMD 6274/16c/16th) all my crunching machines are now Intel! |

Mamaj .....Would you give us a ball park figure on build cost for MB cpu's and ram for this one.
----------------------------------------I would like to see how much more I paid (if any) and run some power costs against that for how long to break even. ![]() |

Mamaj .....Would you give us a ball park figure on build cost for MB cpu's and ram for this one. OC - I bought this device second hand completely built as is, for around £2500, all I had to do was install the nodes and PUS's in the chassis and the OS which is Ubuntu 13.10 desktop as it doesn't need server due to there being 2 CPU's in each node.I would like to see how much more I paid (if any) and run some power costs against that for how long to break even. Power stats posted earlier in thread. Output stats will be updated later today... [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 1, 2014 7:28:15 PM] |

As requested some stats, if you need any clarification please ask...
![]() Above is the actual results from each of the four nodes, node 3 had an issue as was replaced, which is why the numbers for that node are lower. Below is the averages for the machine/device as a whole: ![]() I would be interested in your thoughts and comments... |
