Re: New Toy?

if you want another "nwe toy",i think the ES E5-2400 serious will be a good choice.

Re: New Toy?

You should post your query at the XS (Extreme Systems) forum. They have a lot of knowledge of these things there.
Cheers

The only problem with that, the mb in the nodes will not take the newer CPU's, unless someone has tried it and can confirm it works...

That was one of the reasons for asking the Question...

Re: New Toy?

I am strongly influenced by the cost of electricity so the piece of info that I am most interested in is how much power a rig uses.

With that I can see my ongoing costs for the coming years.

I was once pleased with having a 2600K overclocked to get 11K ppd boinc. the downside was that it used around 240watts from the wall.

let me suggest then a 2600K/3770K rig, which should be available quite cheap now on ebay, let me further suggest that overclocking it to get 9k ppd will get a power use of 200w at the wall.

This will cost me ~1752Kw/hrs per year
I build with the view that I get 3 years use, so total is 5256Kw/hrs for this rig

In my case this would cost 5256 x £0.179 = £940

Plus the cost of the build of course

My second build recently was the duallie using e5 26xx ES cpu's @ 2.4 which produces around double the points of the rig above.

This one uses ~240watts

This will cost me ~2102Kw/hrs per year
For 3 years use, the total is 6307Kw/hrs for this rig

In my case this would cost 6307 x £0.179 = £1129 again plus the rig build cost

You could shop around for ebay prices to ascertain the build cost of either rig depending on whatt you are prepared to use that is secondhand and the quality of common parts like psu's that you think is good enough.

To put things into perspective I built mine for £1295 plus a case that I don't usually use. This did mean waiting for deals although some parts were new too.

These days you can get a top of the line z77 MB for £150, an average one for £100. a cpu for £200, ram for £65 and psu for £100, an ssd of a type you would want to own might add £70 or an HDD for maybe less

This suggests that to get the same points would have a build cost of up to £1170.

A summary then:

cost of ownership whilst crunching wcg @ 18K ppd boinc =

2 * 3770K setups = £1170 + £940 + £940 = £3050

1* e5 26xx duallie = £1295 + £1129 = £2424

You may need to add a bit for odd items that I missed costing as I already have them.
