Re: New Toy?

hey,Mamajuana,i also want to use the x5650 to run WCG,would you kindly enough to tell me how many points can a daul x5650 CPUs get erveyday recently?
thanks a lot!
in the stats shown above the 'AvPPD' column for Node 1-4 is what you could expect from 2 x X5650 in one machine.

However, I have another machine with an EVGA SR2 MB with the 2 x X5650's that returns nearer to 100k PPD so it will depend on your system.

The above should only be used as a guide as all machines vary, depending on CPU, RAM, MB, OS and WU's crunched...

Hope it helps!

Re: New Toy?

Ok, so the 'New Toy' has been running for a while, the output is good with numbers around 273k for the device per day.

I want to improve this by changng the processors, does anyone know which is the highest spec processor I can install in this device?

The Dell web site just lists the x5500/x5600 series, but will any of the newer L5 xxxx or similar work in this system?

thanks for your comments

Re: New Toy?

Many thanks bearcat I've just been looking at that list, I'm looking at keeping the TDP down to 95 due to the fact this unit gets hot and thus very noisy!

Currently on my list of possibles are the following

Model / Cores Threads Freq. Turbo FSB L2 L3 TDP Socket
    Xeon X5670 6 12 2.933 GHz 3.333 GHz 1.5MB 12MB 95 Socket 1366
    Xeon X5667 4 8 3.067 GHz 3.467 GHz 1MB 12MB 95 Socket 1366
    Xeon X5675 6 12 3.067 GHz 3.467 GHz 1.5MB 12MB 95 Socket 1366
    Xeon X5672 4 8 3.2 GHz 3.6 GHz 1MB 12MB 95 Socket 1366

I'm torn between the extra speed of the 4c/8th and the extra threads of the 6c/12th processors...

I'm thinking more towards one of the last two as I'm already using X5650/2.67/6c/12th the cost outlay to increase performance is not enough going to one of the first two.

Not sure which would give more benefit, any ideas?

Re: New Toy?

wow - what does a system like that cost - I WISH I could afford something like that - I would love to put together a system that rocks (but at a very good price) !!!

Re: New Toy?

I have no knowledge in server CPU's but I think you would be better served with more threads. From those, I would go for the X5670 unless the X5675 is only marginally pricier but I don't really have any knowledge in these CPU's.

- AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 4C/8T 2.0 GHz - 28W
- AMD Ryzen 7 7730U 8C/16T 3.0 GHz

Re: New Toy?

When I built my rig, I chose the X5670's. Think they are the best price for performance and wattage. Thought about the 3.33 ghz but eat to much juice. I don't OC my dually. Works great for crunching and my itunes server.

Thanks Mark, the initial cost is one thing, the electric bill is another...

I'm looking to upgrade the CPU's only trouble is there are eight of them! finding the best one to give an increase in output while keeping the TDP (watts) down is a balancing act!

Re: New Toy?

Falconet/Bearcat - The other issue is that I'm currently @2.67 my main obective here is the greatest increase in speed and thus output (hopefully), but as mentioned the difference between the 5672 & 5675 may come down to price and availability...

Time will tell, I think my choice will be the X5675 IF, and it is a big IF, I can get 8 at a sensible price...
