On the ripple forums,
----------------------------------------a guy who says he is unemployed and is just doing it to do it, has made a video to walk people step by step through the whole process. I watched it and if there hadn't been a bug not allowing some old timers who had points in another team, it would have worked for me. The link is back several pages here... I'll see if I can find it. Sorry the link is in the Ripple team thread, forgot where i was ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jack007 at Jan 30, 2014 10:41:54 AM] |

Thanks Jack.
----------------------------------------I assumed that something like what I suggested already existed somewhere, but the point is that it does no good if no one can find it. I also think that everyone who is used to this forum grossly underestimates the difficulty it presents to new people. MVN is so unlike anything else that even experienced forum users are accustomed to that it really does require a learning curve. And the fact of the matter is that most people just aren't going to bother - not given the payout one is likely to see from just one or two rigs crunching. Not that I'm criticizing Ripple Labs for how they're handling things. RL has been a blessing for WCG. The problems I see are on the WCG end and I seem to be one of only a handful of people who seem to be bothered by that. But that's fine for me personally. I'm used to being in the minority. But I would urge anyone reading this to step back and try to realize that RL has given us a huge gift that we are squandering. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Jan 30, 2014 3:01:54 PM] |

As a new member I do hope that WCG does get new projects. I haven't been a member long, but the main reason why I have joined WCG vs other BOINC projects was that the project offered here sounded like they had real world applications, unlike others like SETI (no offense to those that contribute to this one or any others like this one).
----------------------------------------I am not going to be leaving soon, however but will not stop contributing to it even if there are not too many projects. My feeling is that no matter to who I contribute my cpu power it benefits AIDS, Clean Energy, or Mapping Cancers so to me that is a win. ![]() |

Well done vlado101 for your positive support (no matter how many projects are currently running), and also for joining "the machine"

That is what this is all about: helping. It doesn't matter if you crunch one WU a day or a 100, your still helping. CJSL Gotta keep crunching, there's a world to save !!! |

Even though we add between 100 and 200 new users per day, we are losing active users at an even faster rate than we're gaining them and yet nothing is done about that. Specifically, since the beginning of the year, we have lost almost 2000 (that's right - 2000 ) active users. . Another way to look at that would be crunchers who have achieved their goals on available WCG projects and have ventured out into the wider world of BOINC. Light up a new project and many will be back. ![]() |

Or it might be caused by continual worldwide crisis, don't you think?
----------------------------------------Lot of people exhausted their reserves, lost their jobs, increased their expenses (e.g. by health insurances). Kids are chasing Bitcoins and similar treasures and don't care about charity. WCG fault? Sure, who else. If you don't believe, ask some of current (long-time) WCG members. ![]() Crunching@Home since January 13 2000. Thanks everyone for your comments. Rest assured that we continue to work towards adding more research projects. We've already started the very early stages of bringing on board the next project - a process which typically takes a few months.
As for the GPU discussion, this is driven by the researchers. In most cases, each research project comes to World Community Grid with its own research application (which also helps explain why it takes months to bring on a new project). Unless that research application already comes with GPU capabilities, the researchers have to weigh the often significant amount of work to add GPU capabilities, against the anticipated benefits. Also, not all projects are GPU compatible. We always promote GPU's potential with our current and future projects, on an ongoing basis. But that decision is first driven by the researchers. |

sid2: That's a good point. I was never really convinced that badges would be an important motivating factor, but given the success it's seen, I'm very happy to admit I completely missed the mark on that one.
----------------------------------------However the lesson to be learned from that I think is not 'hey, you were wrong about that so you could be wrong about everything.' Rather I think the takeaway there is that even small changes can make a huge difference in motivation and morale. The only way you find out is to try. But the WCG attitude isn't 'let's give it a shot and see how it works' but rather 'prove somehow that it will work before we even attempt it.' Branjo: I completely agree that a lot of people are still hurting and that we don't do nearly enough for people in need, not to mention people who are ready willing and able to work but can't find employment except at a subpoverty minimum wage. I don't know if things are so bad overall that people fortunate enough to have their own computer would mind running BOINC in the background while it's on - but I don't know. Since I run servers 24/7 to crunch I and probably you probably have a different attitude toward this sort of thing. I just hope that if that is a factor, the economy continues to improve and lift everyone up a little in the process. ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by twilyth at Feb 4, 2014 9:48:39 PM] |
