Re: New project in scope

If the Alphas are unstable in a test environment and causing errors in the computational returns, why waste time pushing them outside? They will still be both unstable and unreliable, diverting cycles from stable WU's - I'm quite content to wait for the Alphas to be running consistently before they are sent into the wild as Betas. Lets face it, there are often a few issues arising from the Betas, why risk having that extrapolated to hundreds of problems to be checked and cross-ref'ed by the Techs - that's a bigger problem to solve and likely to delay everything further than necessary. Patience was a virtue, now it's an App!!! Techs - Please take your time to sort out the Alphas and then let's have a 'shed load' of Betas please!!!!

^This.
Not that I'm impatient or anything.... praying

Re: New project in scope

We are in the final stages of the alpha testing. However, we have been here for a couple of weeks. What has blocking us for going into beta testing at this time is one technical issue that either crashes the application or causes it to generate inconsistent results. We are digging deep into this one but it is taking longer than expected. Once we clear this issue and have a clean alpha testing run, we should be clear to start a beta test. Sorry that we cannot provide a clearer answer at this time.

Thanks. It is helpful to know what you can tell us and not be completely in the dark.

Re: New project in scope

Hello nanoprobe,
Kevin, has there ever been any thought given to letting some of us do some of the alpha testing?
confused My idea of alpha testing may be old-fashioned. It involves a highly specialized software environment using an array of expensive compiler tools to track down bugs. What is your view?

Had no idea it was that involved. I was hoping it would have them send WUs to testers and then return the results for the techs to analyze. The thought was that more alpha testers would help with sorting out problems with new apps. thinking

Re: New project in scope

Our development/testing process, in short, consists of:

* Running the initial application unmodified
* Modify the app to add checkpointing, trimming unnecessary output, etc
* Run this modified version in standalone (i.e. not under the boinc client) and test that it reproduces results equivalent to the unmodified form
* Next is what we call alpha testing (but probably could also be called integration testing). This is where we put the research binary onto our test BOINC grid and run a set of workunits against it (workunits at this stage are built using our production processes). We have a 15 or so test virtual machines, some physical machines (like macs), plus all of our workstations from the team that are running the client and are connected to our test boinc grid. The virtual machines are built so that the client is killed and restarted every 3 hours to stress test checkpointing.
* Once we have stable results out of alpha and the results are verified as correct by the researchers, we are then able to go beta testing which is where we get your help to run across a much greater diversity of machine types and look to see what happens.
* Once that is stable we get to launch

Hope this helps everyone understand what we are doing.

Re: New project in scope

Thanks Kevin for your detailed input into what goes on 'behind the scenes' when attempting to bring a new project to fruition. Information such as this, all helps people understand what a challenging process it can be at times, and hence, why Beta's can not really be predicted - other than saying "they'll be ready for Beta testing, when they're ready".

Re: New project in scope

Thanks for the explanation. Suggest you alert the new project team to have allot of storage space to receive wu results. With the lack of projects, folks are itching to gain a new badge. The new project will get hammered quick.

Re: New project in scope

Thank you for the detailed update, Kevin! Wishing you lots of success in working out the issues on this new project! Can't wait to beta test, and then run it for real!
