Because most of the programmers know how to code CPUs and not GPUs? That's one of the reasons I believe. The others are, that not every computational problem can be translated into massive-parallel/GPU computing solution so, that the final effect is a considerable performance increase. Moreover, it seems that GPGPU computing (and their respective compilers) are still not mature enough - there is a lot of bugs and issues. |

The new cancer project is using a different research application than HCC so just because the HCC app had GPU capabilities, doesn't mean the new project does.
It does require quite a bit of extra effort for the research application developers to port an application to GPU - and then some effort for us to enable that GPU version on WCG. It's up to each research team to determine whether the significant development effort justifies the potential benefits of GPU. In the case of the new project, while the research application for it hasn't yet been ported to GPU, the research team is interested in porting it at some point. Just won't happen before launch. |

Dear admins/techs,
----------------------------------------is there maybe a rough estimate when could we expect the new cancer project Betas? |

We are in the final stages of the alpha testing. However, we have been here for a couple of weeks. What has blocking us for going into beta testing at this time is one technical issue that either crashes the application or causes it to generate inconsistent results. We are digging deep into this one but it is taking longer than expected. Once we clear this issue and have a clean alpha testing run, we should be clear to start a beta test. Sorry that we cannot provide a clearer answer at this time.

Thanks, Kevin. An update like that is just the sort that's needed these days. A brief description of the situation is what's important, even without a clear answer on timescales.

Thanks Kevin! As Tony said - such update is absolutely OK and we fully understand such situations.

If the Alphas are unstable in a test environment and causing errors in the computational returns, why waste time pushing them outside? They will still be both unstable and unreliable, diverting cycles from stable WU's - I'm quite content to wait for the Alphas to be running consistently before they are sent into the wild as Betas. Lets face it, there are often a few issues arising from the Betas, why risk having that extrapolated to hundreds of problems to be checked and cross-ref'ed by the Techs - that's a bigger problem to solve and likely to delay everything further than necessary. Patience was a virtue, now it's an App!!! Techs - Please take your time to sort out the Alphas and then let's have a 'shed load' of Betas please!!!!
