Re: New project in scope

Hi everyone, to ease speculation.. yes we're still on track to launch our next cancer project in (hopefully early) fall. We're currently in alpha testing and will release to beta once we're ready. Yes, although it's a cancer project from the same scientific team as HCC, it uses a completely different line of research and is therefore a brand new project and not a continuation of HCC. Yes, we will launch on CPU first with potential for Android later and maybe even GPU some time in the future.

Why would the new cancer app be for the CPU when the HCC GPU app was such a success? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Re: New project in scope

Technical/implementation reasons maybe?
I'm wondering whether there's another GPU project in queue...

Re: New project in scope

Maybe the application that they are going to use still hasn't the GPU part finished?

Re: New project in scope

Gotta crawl before you walk:) Testing/debugging may hold priority over optimization.. hopefully the port to OpenCL will be relatively straightforward. And thanks for the update!

The WCG techs have no control over this. Only the software coders working with the scientists do. Code has to be specifically written for GPU hardware. I'm a layman when it comes to software but I've gleaned from my reading that GPU coding is likened to writing a program for 10, 000 very fast but simple cpus that understand only very simple instructions. Sometimes the scientists just can't get the results they want from the simple CPUs or, it's just not worth the programmers time to try. Think about doing long division on a calculator with only an add key. You'd have to add the divisor repeatedly until if was greater than the dividend, count up the number of time you added, less one because your over, etc. Well think of those GPUs as the dumb calculator but you have a thousand of them.

If you.re itching to rack up some GPU BOINC points, there are several projects one other than CG that will be happy to take your input. I love running that little space heater myself, but only in the winter.

Sad thing: I think you get it more than some developers do B2I:)

Thanks for the update jhindo!

Because most of the programmers know how to code CPUs and not GPUs?

BTW, congrats on joining the top 200!
