Re: An interesting month

I got my hands on a pair of the new 10 core Ivy Bridge Xeons..
Installed the suckers and no post.
My bios is supposed to be 'Ivy Bridge ready" BUT I have the feeling that my chips are "so" new that the microcode isn't in the bios..Hope to get this solved this week because the little kid that is still inside is dying to see how they will do.. biggrin

The rest of us are also waiting with baited breath to see your results. Build on.
Cheers

Re: An interesting month

Just an educated guess but I think between 160,000-180,000 WCG PPD..I am on just the Aids project and not sure if that will effect the numbers up or down..
The chips are 2500Mhz default/2900 on turbo and I have them at 3047Mhz.. Nice and cool, 57C max and they idle at an insane 25-29C in a 75F room in an open case..Very pleased with them so far..

You should try that beast with a Linux 64 OS when you're done testing Windows. I'll bet that baby will really fly on the VINA tasks.

You are right but I'm an old dog that is very comfortable with windows and the prospect of setting up Linux brings tears to my eyes. old_chap from the XS forum has been after me to do this for months and has shown me in real numbers the expected increase but when I set up these machines I use them as my "daily driver" and want familarity with the machine.
These is also the factor that now I'm like a finely tuned car with a gas tank that only holds a pint. I get tired very easily. Tomorrow is one month since I got home from the hospital and they told me at least 3 months before I'd start to see any stamina increases as they have me on meds that keep my heart rate under 65 beats per minute so that hopefully the heart muscle will "somewhat"( their words) heal itself..I found out the hard way that they were right as I had issues just getting the cpu's to work (Bios,IMPI firmware, etc) and actually had to mod the bios a little to get them to work. That was a 14 hour day and beat the heck out of me so live and learn but they are working! biggrin
Observations:
Keep in mind that these are not the top bins available. E5-2670 V2's.
2500/2900 on turbo on all cores, 3300 on 1-2 cores and I have them running at 3047MHz (29x105.08 BCLK )
Performance is slightly better than my overclocked SB 8 cores at 3612MHz BUT temps are VERY nice. 25-29C at idle and max at 100% load is in the 52-57C range plus they draw less elec. Overall VERY happy with what I am seeing. Now they haven't had even a full day on WCG yet so thats still an unknown but in a few days I'll see what they are doing.

Re: An interesting month

So when are they coming out with a quad socket board? 80 threads would be way too cool. biggrin

They exist but you wouldn't want them and they will take 15 core chips so lets see:
15 times 8=120 cores and with hyperthreading 240 threads..yes, that might crank out a few WU a day! biggrin
