Hi all, In order to get any work done, I had to ABORT beta tasks that showed up in my messages as being "Restarted". If you are executing any BETAs that are continuously restarting, you need to abort those tasks or your compute time will be lost. In reviewing the processing of one of these tasks, I saw that it would execute for less than 3 minutes before doing a restart. From my reading of the thread for this beta over in the Beta Support forum, the current thinking is that it is an antivirus problem with the A/V blocking the task and BOINC restarting it. That's not been finalized yet though. If this is the case, I do use Norton Internet Security. But, I can only say that is the case for three of our machines. I don't know what A/V software is being used on the two other machines having the problem. Edit: I did check with the owner of the other two machines and he says that MSFT A/V software is being used. I run Microsoft Security Essentials. I got 30 of the Betas and did not have that problem so... beats me. |

I just changed a motherboard out for a customer. There was little I could do to that computer to turn on, so it was cheaper to change the motherboard than spend anymore time on it. The hard part was to keep it cheap, so I had to find a motherboard that worked with his CPU and memory. Long story short, I replaced it and his is now working great with his old hardware.
----------------------------------------The funny thing is, I dug up my old 800HMz memory and core 2 duo processor, threw a hard drive on it and a small power supply and installed Windows 7 64 bit. It's working great and I have no idea why. The best part is, I now have a new quad-core cruncher for WCG. On another note, if you are a system builder stay away from XFX motherboards. They are great motherboards, but their web site and customer support sucks. I've had a trouble ticket in with them for a week now, and haven't received a reply, yet, and all I wanted was a BIOS update. Happy crunching, all!
BIG BANG THEORY: In the beginning there was nothing... which exploded

Hi all, In order to get any work done, I had to ABORT beta tasks that showed up in my messages as being "Restarted". I got 30 of the Betas and did not have that problem so... beats me. I have NIS on both of my machines. I think one WU from the last beta might have done one restart (if my recollection is accurate) but I didn't pay it much mind since it finished. Apparently, tasks that start, stop and restart repeatedly are often a result of an A/V program blocking it for whatever reason and BOINC starting it back up as it's the "next" task in line so it's understandable to suspect that with the restarting betas. However, I'm increasingly doubtfl of that being the case as I would expect that to continuously stop/restart the task until the user aborts it. In the beta, folks were seeing tasks restarting and eventually running to completion. I see they've already started a second beta. I need to go check that out as I've gotten four and one is sitting at 0.5% after 4+ hours. |
