MMJ - If it's punch per pound in terms of points then at the moment GPU's would be the way to go.
----------------------------------------If you really want to do CPU's then reduk and I are running rigs which are relatively cheap for the core count. I've got a PC with 2 Intel QL1K 24core (96 threads in total) which has been running for three years now (although it's not doing WCG right now as I don't need the extra heat ![]()

If you want a quick win and aren't paying attention, there's always this option...
----------------------------------------https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMD-Ryzen-9-3950X-...00000051WOF-/294245393678 A mere £120 for a pair of "novelty" 3950X processors ![]()

MMJ - If it's punch per pound in terms of points then at the moment GPU's would be the way to go. I'm not really sure which way to go ATM. But thanks for the offer of your server, I have a couple of Dell C6100's a few years ago, they had 8 x 6 core X5650's total of 96 threads with HT. Don't think I want to go there again, the current one for sale is 80 threads, with much less power usage! If you really want to do CPU's then reduk and I are running rigs which are relatively cheap for the core count. I've got a PC with 2 Intel QL1K 24core (96 threads in total) which has been running for three years now (although it's not doing WCG right now as I don't need the extra heat ![]() They were also a lot of work to manage as they are 4 nodes with 2 CPU's in each. Still looking at the options. I always wanted a cluster server, as it was so easy to expand/add new nodes etc, but they are really redundant (except for commercial) now due to the power consumption and noise. To say nothing of the huge steps, no leaps in the thread counts of current processors... I think, I'm going to look towards something multi core, with low power, some of the latest i9 & i10's have low power requirements but incredible thread counts and speeds. I also like some of the larger AMD EPY thingies, but are sadly out of my budget! I'll update you when I decide

Mamajuanauk, if I may be so bold to ask, you said:

If I were to do a large core build today, with the most important factor being cost/core, this is what I what I would go for:
----------------------------------------32c/64t - EPYC 7551P (single socket) or 7551 (dual socket); these sell for £2,000+ retail but atm you can grab them for £250+ on Ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&a...H_TitleDesc=0&_sop=15 https://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-epyc-7551...4mb-cache-180w-cpu-retail Single or Dual socket SP3 (EPYC) 7002 EPYC motherboard, which are going for around £300-£400 atm on Ebay. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&a...amp;_osacat=0&_sop=15 If I remember rightly when we ran the 7551P they did around 50K per day BOINC credits (on MCM WCG). ![]() [Edit 2 times, last edit by ncoded.com at Jul 12, 2021 12:00:09 AM] |

But just to add, Like Mac1 mentioned, right now if your interested in WCG OpenPandemics then the way to go is actually GPUs.
----------------------------------------You could buy a £200-£300 used GPU and that would annihilate the above system in terms of BOINC points per day / points per KW. Also with all the work that WCG has done getting tasks ported to GPUs, and the amount of GPUs currently available, chances are WCG will be creating more GPU projects in the future. -- Today was actually a great day for GPUs in terms of WCG !! https://imgur.com/a/o1V7ijq ![]() [Edit 3 times, last edit by ncoded.com at Jul 12, 2021 3:48:52 AM] |

WOW!!! I didn't realise the EYPC's are going so cheap...
----------------------------------------Thanks I'll have to have a look at them or a half decent GPU, to upgrade my current ones I'll report back

Mamajuanauk, if I may be so bold to ask, you said: Apart from setting up 4 nodes within each chassis, the main other work was dust! I had to remove and clean out each node regularly to keep airflow up and noise down. Dell C6100's are 2U rack servers, with 4 nodes, each one is an independent server with 2 CPU's and it's own RAM & HDD. the fans in the chassis are very high speed and noisy! They were also a lot of work to manage as they are 4 nodes with 2 CPU's in each. My question is: What kind of (extra) work did you have to do to manage your system (compared to normal system maintenance)?

Hi Team
----------------------------------------![]() I have just been shafted by my Employers and am losing almost 1/4 of my wages (A really nice Thankyou for being a Key Worker and working my butt off right the way through this Pandemic, allowing them to make hundreds of millions in profit), so I've got to cut back on my Elecy Bill to try save money, so I'm afraid my continuing crunching isn't going to be possible at my currant rate. So as soon as MIP has finished, almost all of my systems will cease production, just my main PC & Laptop will continue ![]() Hope every is okay ![]() ![]() ![]() |
