I can recommend the 3900X, and you can pick them up on eBay for a lot less than the newer 5900X equivalent. I'm using a cheap B450 motherboard too. Mine can sit there at 3.9GHz across 12 cores/24 threads all day long. Because it's sitting under my desk, I use very quiet air cooling deliberately running on the toasty side (currently 87C) to keep the noise down to almost silent.

Sorry to change topic, but I am puzzled about the "help stop TB" project. I have never received any work for it, so assumed that like "Smash Childhood Cancer" it was just lying dormant. Yet I have recently had emails from WCG about it suggesting that it is still going. Is it for Linux only or something like that ?

Hi AlanS, HSTB are just very few and far between, only a few hundred wus each day. I was fortunate to land one yesterday, my first in a few weeks. You have to be requesting new work quite regularly, and just hope.

Thanks DC, both yourself and ncoded had the same idea. However, looking at my track record, while they would be good choices, they seem a little ordinary! lol!I really have no idea where to go from here, I've built some unusual machines, many in open/custom cases, some a little closer to 'off the shelf' ones. While thinking, I'm open to suggestions... What's the most CPU's the go on one MB? How there's a thought! M

Xeon Platinum run quad socket, EPYC run dual socket, and Threadripper/Ryzen run single socket. Largest core counts are 64c.

We've just bought an EPYC server for work. Dual 48 core, so 192 threads. Would be ideal for WCG, but sadly we're using it for building software! A bit out of my price range though, being about £13k I think.

If I only had £13k to spare.

Thanks for that, my last build was the one for sale ATM...I've been thinking of a system that gives the most punch per pound, while using the least power. Needs some research me thinks? M
