Re: Hi All!

Hi DC,

I should like to add to the kudos coming your way for your stats site. I've said before, I think it's marvelous and very useful, and I think it might even attract crunchers to the UK team. So thank you!

I've taken a look at the WCG2 site as you asked, and it all looks good. Everything appears to be there and it all seems to have updated overnight -- EXCEPT for the Project page. All the data seems identical to the day before. (I initially suspected that because I was lucky enough to have an ARP1 WU validate before the midnight cut-off, so it appears in my WCG stats today.)

I'm sure you'll get it fixed, and keep up the excellent work.

Re: Hi All!

Thanks for having a look Apis.

I'm somewhat confused about the ARP thing. The two Projects screens are identical, which is what I'm interest in. However, there is some data for ARP in the database... total project points 6,979. Maybe it's too small to show up in the pie charts, or maybe the project needs to be running for a week in order for my stats computations to pick it up.

For now, if the wcg and wcg2 sites and databases stay in sync, that's all I'm concerned about. I've upgraded everything except for the code I've written, so that's:

  • new virtual machine (slightly more memory)
  • different operating system (Ubuntu vs Debian, approximately 4 years newer)
  • new version of the SQL database (MariaDB 10.1 vs 10.0)
  • new version of Java language (11 vs 8)

All of the above have required slight changes, and an amount of setup (e.g. I'd forgotten to add the script that automatically runs the stats site when the machine reboots). In the case of the Java upgrade, in their wisdom the language maintainers had removed some of the key XML libraries, which caused some issues.

As you can see, plenty of scope for things not quite working right.

Re: Hi All!

I would also like to express my sincere gratitude to DC for the excellent work he does producing the stats. It sets us apart from other teams and is very much appreciated.

It looks like ARP is taking a while to get off the ground. Looking forward to my first work unit (and first badge!)

Re: Hi All!

@DC,

I still had yesterday's data in cache for WCG, with the new data for WCG2, and was looking for changes in line with expectations. Nothing on the Projects page changed at all, as far as I could see. So I assumed that there must have been a problem. The lack of ARP1 seemed to confirm that, because low beta numbers do seem to get through.

Just my 2p'th.

Re: Hi All!

@Apis.
Hmmm, interesting. I'll take a few screenshots tonight, and then cross check tomorrow after the update at ~7am. It could be a fault in my processing, or it could be that WGC didn't update the data.

If the new and the old stay in sync for the next couple of updates (regardless of whether it's correct or not!!!) I'll switch over wholly to the new database and server on Sunday. My poor NAS (on which I'm now running 3 virtual machines, one of which is running a full mail and web server for about a dozen accounts) is gasping for breath!

Re: Hi All!

It looks like everything is working fine, so I'll switch everyone over to the new server, and keep the old one running in the background for a couple of days.

smile Stats Site

I'd just like to say a huge thank you to all of you for your compliments regarding my stats website. It's not the world's best website by any means. The front-end JavaScript is particularly unpleasant, but the Java/MySQL back end has worked well for nearly 4 years now, with almost no effort on my part. It runs for literally months on end without me doing anything at all, so please don't praise me for the hard work!!!

For those who don't remember, a few years ago jonnieb-uk used to paste twice-daily statistics updates into the forum. I don't know how he generated the data, but clearly he put a lot of effort into it, and eventually he had to stop, for whatever reasons. A few months following jonnieb-uk stopping, I went through a difficult period, losing my wife to cancer and then a couple of months later rupturing my Achilles tendon. During the following 3 months of immobility, on anti-depressants and only working part time, I decided to see whether it was possible to download WCG data and do something with it. The rest as they say is history, although to be honest I've done almost nothing to the stats site since February 2016.

Having upgraded everything under the hood, I'm now in a position where I can safely make improvements. Previously, I wasn't sure whether it would even compile, let alone work. In the past, I have asked for suggestions for improvements, and have done nothing with them, mainly due to a lack of time or it just being too hard. Anyway, I've finally decided to add something new, so watch this space! There is a big hint on my stats page as to what it is smile.

Thanks again for your kind words.

Re: Stats Site

Well, I've started!
I can now retrieve the team challenge data. Guess how many past challenges we have entered? Well, the answer is, I don't know, because the most I can pull back without changing my tactics is 5000! That's a heck of lot. Basically, I'll focus on the current ones and the ones that have recently ended, I think.
