The XML is rather hit and miss. It certainly doesn't have the short names in it. In fact, for the challenges, the only way I could get the project name for each challenge was to actually download the HTML version of the data and search for the text '<span id="projects">' in the ~ 15 kilobytes of data for each challenge page, and then extract the text that follows. For some reason, it's missing from the XML data altogether.

Yuk! That just makes me appreciate all the more what you do for us to provide such a great site. More power to your elbow, DC! Thanks Apis. Another interesting quirk is that the "completed challenges" data is returned in oldest first order, and I couldn't find any way of changing that. We have entered 5040 projects (or thereabouts) since 2008, and it appears that the only way to get the most recently expired one is to download the previous 5039... except there is a limit of 5000 results per query! At that point, you have to start subdividing by type or something, but you still have to retrieve all 5039 records. I've solved that one by keeping a record of the current challenges in the database, and for up to a week after they expire I go and individually retrieve the data for each of those recent projects. That's why the "previous challenges" table in my stats is slowly populating. Programming is mostly dull ![]()

Would the person who's stealing all the ARP units please let me have some? I haven't seen a single one yet!

Hi guys,
----------------------------------------I'm having a funny issue with my BOINC client on my Windows PC, I temporarily stopped accepting new tasks for a day and when I enabled again I tried to update the project but I keep getting "Communication deferred". I've tried restarting my BOINC client and my PC, as well as resetting the project, to no avail... It's been happening for about a day now so it doesn't seem to be anything temporary like rate limiting... Any tips?

I wouldn't worry about it Distemper. I think it is deferred because your work unit cache is as full as it can be, so it will try again in x minutes time. If you set boinc to "no new tasks", it will take a while to refill the cache after "allowing new tasks", this is by design in case your computer is in a reboot loop, I believe.

I think I've done as much as I'm intending to do on the Challenges stuff for now. They are now sorted as follows:
----------------------------------------Current - most recently ending first Past - most recently ended first Future - soonest starting first In the event of a tie they're sorted by project name. I've also set some colours for the podium positions. There is no significance to the "steel blue" coloured lines, other than to distinguish them from silver. Any bugs or suggestions, please shout. There is an obvious "next step" with the challenges stuff - namely to click on each challenge and see a list of all the teams in the challenge, ranked in order. However, that's quite a big chunk of effort, so that'll have to wait for a while. Finally, I've fixed the bug wherein the Overtakes are occasionally blank. It's only taken about 3 years. Sorry! Finally finally, well done DMNI for breaking into another team top ten (Run Time).
