@DC
We either need a breakthrough (fusion at last?) or a very single-minded government, but life's never quite like that. My brain hurts trying to decide how to do the 'right' thing. I just try not to do too much damage, it's far less emotionally draining. And I didn't understand your comment about 'it does take an hour to power down'. Have you thought about hibernating it instead of shutting it right down? That works on all 'puters, not just lappies, and means it will start up from where it left off. No need for tasks to complete first. Just a thought. |

I simply meant that I've set the ACPI S3 sleep to 60 minutes and I usually just walk away rather than hit the standby button on my keyboard. Amazingly (for someone who remembers the early days of ACPI) it actually resumes from sleep, despite the fact that I'm running Linux ![]()

Maybe I shouuld buy a new Ryzen 7 3800X and offset it by turning the heating off in my house. I do hear you on the energy debate and run less hardware in the summer but I am kind of hooked, I joined through the Ripple crypto currency WCG tie-up and then my dad got cancer (just had 5 year all clear). I love the *excuse* to buy new bits and do geeky stuff with config. If the heat from the Ryzen means burning less gas and your electric supply is from 'renewables' then maybe it's not such a terrible idea. There are rumours of climate related projects coming up hopefully soon too, would be nice to heat the house on irony . So far I've not turned the heating on, just moved PC's around, down to 3 now and 675w output which should be ok for Autumn. We certainly have a very single-minded government Apis, but probably best not to talk about that in this forum!!! Yes let's stick to the easy stuff like diseases and climate change. Happy weekend all.

My energy supplier (Octopus, referral link with £50 kickback available), allows you to download your smart meter consumption data, and the 24h forward prices for their constantly variable "Agile" tariff. I have a cunning plan involving automatically turning my smart sockets off when we exceeded a certain cost or kWh threshold, or less controversially as far as SWMBO is concerned, switching a WCG cruncher on/off based on the electricity prices. Just got to find the time. It shouldn't be difficult, according to my own CV!

I have found that by not using hyper-threading, I use less electricity and get the same amount of work done. So that is what I'm doing.

So here I am, with this MB 2 PSUs and 8 GPUs all built working and crunching away over night.
----------------------------------------Currently doing Seti, which is where I started in about 2004 I think... doing really well, about 15k per night, not running all night though. At 1400 watts peak, it just can't run all night I'll get some pics tomorrow and post ASAP

My threadripper system was using about 360watts per hour with 32 threads, currently using about 250watts with 16 threads, that is a big difference.

Just got to find the time. It shouldn't be difficult, according to my own CV! Sounds cool, if you could somehow store the heat generated it's kind of an Economy 7 style set-up but driven by market forces rather than cheap overnight oversupply, maybe 'charge up' a thermal mass during low cost periods for use later on that might work. Do the rates fluctuate much? Re. points per KWH, I make mine 53k (points) per KWH, at 13p per KWH ... no I'm not going there. Hoping to switch to some 7nm AMD kit soon, selling off 14nm gear on Ebay, had to let a 28thread 2648L v4 system go for less than £200 recently, thought the bidding would be much stronger, I guess there's not much market for engineering samples. ![]()
