Good Morning All.
----------------------------------------Sorry to hear that you are pegging back Dave - I'm so glad that I have passed the phase of having any sort of boss at all let alone an unsympathetic one. All that is worrying me at the moment is my aged 17" Mac Book pro which has sprung the case with its swolen battery. I am loathe to turn it off but may have to bite the bullet soon and loose 4 of my 20 cores.

Well done Steve. Less than a week to go before the team hits 4000 years of run time. I've taken the decision to ramp my output right down, so I'll be dropping down the rankings fairly sharply. I lost my 8 thread work machine some time ago, thanks to an unsympathetic boss, and now I've decided to turn off the 3 cores on my server (in the interests of saving money). At some point I might bring 8 very low powered cores into the mix, if I get chance, which will be good for badges but that's about all. Yep nice one Steve on the 500k! DC, I see in our signatures we've snuck into the UK top hundred! ![]() I only get to see my Boss face to face about twice a year which is nice, in fact he's over this week funnily enough. At least you had the kit running WCG for a while, my company wouldn't allow that at all which is a shame, we have a bunch of test servers sitting at 1% or less CPU usage, unfortunately they're not even connected to the Internet. Weathers picking up here, apparently 22deg by the weekend ![]()
cheers,

I'm not sure what you mean you "our" and "we've" mac1. The signatures show your personal rankings, both with team UK and within the UK WCG community as a whole. The team itself is in the low 40's in world rankings, as shown on the landing page of my stats site. Regarding performance per watt, yes you're right. My two low-powered Jetway industrial PCs have a proper quad core Celeron N2930 chip, and each one uses about 6W at the wall when idle and 10W when flat out. Each core takes about 3 times longer to crunch a WCG unit than does my 6th generation i5 server (which I reckon is over 10W per core). On that basis, I can easily justify 20W (let's call it £25/year) on electricity for 8 cores.

Nice processor Andy Thanks Richard, I liked it too and bought it a friend which was waiting for me when I got home last night ![]() ![]() I'm not sure what you mean you "our" and "we've" mac1 @DC, Sorry, wasn't very clear, I should have mentioned 'for points', I noticed in our signatures that we'd got below 100 in the UK standings. I see Jonnie-B is back, awesome! Your posts got me looking at this thread, loved the enthusiasm! Before it wings it's way to EBay, I've got another decommissioned piece of kit up for grabs if any of you UK crunchers wants to use it. I've recycled the case, PSU, GPU and heatsinks for my new cruncher so it's really just a mobo,CPU's and RAM. It's a Tyan 7025s with dual Xeon x5650's and 16GB. (12 core with 24 threads). Pickup preferred but if you arrange the courier I'm happy to package and label it.
cheers,

Woo-Hoo, after a bit of trial and tribulations, I have an 8 core 16 thread board running WCG as we speak. Thanks again mac1.
----------------------------------------Took a while but I got there. Hoping for a sunny day tomorrow when I can run the whole server. Had CPU check on one board, could not find anything physically wrong, it is running fine now and has not had a error since. ![]() |

Wow that's great news, it's good fun playing with those monsters! You could watercool and run underfloor heating off it ![]() Welcome to the team Prodigyboy! ![]() Check out Dave's (dcrobinson) awesome stats page

You are too kind Andy. The only awesome thing is the fact that it has been running since December 2015 with hardly any human intervention required.

That alone makes it a modern day 9th wonder of the world, a tribute to your programing skill, possibly the only programming that actually does what it is supposed too. Impressive indeed.
----------------------------------------I know that sounds a bit sycophantic but I do actually believe it. My experience with modern day programming has me looking wistfully at my days on the Apple ][e. My god, walked into my computer room this morning to a tropical heatwave, that server could melt the ice caps! It is a good thing I'm very cold in the mornings and usually wear a jumper and a big thick wooly overcoat, now I don't have too, also if I leave the door open I don't have to heat the house either :) The wife was astounded until I showed her that is was only using 150 watts. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Darkmatter.NI at May 4, 2018 10:43:03 AM] |

You are too kind Steve.
----------------------------------------Have a good weekend everybody, and don't forget the team is due to hit 4000 years of crunching on Monday.
