Here's hoping your wife has a quick recovery and that you will be back to full crunching speed soon.

Good night all -
----------------------------------------I hope your wife has a swift recovery TMC. Lots of TLC and sympathy is in order. Stayed up to watch a few episodes of Marvels Agents of Shield while my partner got some well deserved rest - off to bed now - see you all tomorrow.

So many things on which to comment...
----------------------------------------Firstly, I hope your wife's recovery goes well TMC. I do sympathise with your situtation... my wife's illness and my subsequent physical and mental health issues last year cost me about £15K in lost income, which although a minor consideration (you don't get much choice), can become a problem. Make sure you claim for everything you can get off the government. domonijo... that's very keen upgrading on the day of release. My main mail/web server needs upgrading from Ubuntu Server 12.04 to 16.04. Now that's going to be a challenge! Darkmatter... I'm a big fan of Motorola (Lenovo now). My Moto X is lovely, and unencumbered by bloatware. I'm told that it's possible to actually make phone calls on it, as well!!! I've never been a fan of Samsung phones. They always feel too light and plasticy for the (vast) price. I believe the new ones are better though. On matters WCG, nice to see 3.5 billion points on the board, but not so nice that we're about to be overtaken in the next week or so by team Hard OCP. I feel obliged to respond by buying a new desktop. I've got a shortlist of components, but I can't decide on whether to go for an i7-6700 or an i7-6700K. I never overclock, but the increased 8-thread base clock speed on the K model is appealing. And finally, congratulations gibbcorp on the Diamond 5.

Good morning everyone.
---------------------------------------- TMC So glad that your wife has now had her operation, here's to a swift and full recovery. DAVE Sometimes I just go with the flow, it said it was available, so why not boldly go forward and split infinitives without a care? I do not envy your upgrade path 12.04 to 16.04, looks like a real bu**er. Usual caution back up everything before starting, ensure you have fall back points. You know usual Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity. Good luck. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Apr 23, 2016 8:22:19 AM] |

I never overclock, but the increased 8-thread base clock speed on the K model is appealing. I've been thinking along similar lines but my frustration with it is keeping me awake at night, I have an X79 motherboard (Asus P9X79 pro) sat doing nothing, it was changed to an MSI board to give me more PCI_E slots to allow two GFX cards and a PCI_E ssd. All I need is a processor so went on the lookout for another i7 3930 to slap in it, all the other bits - case, PSU, GFX card, memory, hard drive I have but can I find a processor? no, being all of 5 years old it's ancient technology - despite having 6 cores at 3.2Ghz so no-one stocks them anymore. So I look at MSI's website and find it can take an Ivy Bridge 4930 - great, just update the BIOS and we're in business, download the file and stick it on a USB stick as instructed, run the application and........ nothing, just a spinning wheel, expletive(s) deleted - there were many, so set motherboard to boot from USB stick and restart - nothing, no bios file detected. Hmm many more expletives later I think ok i'll update the BIOS of the Asus board and go looking for info only to find that they've changed the format of updates and people are wrecking motherboards left, right and centre so decide that's too much pain and not worth bothering. Upshot of it all is I now have the same motherboard sat idle and if I want a new 6 core machine I have to go X99 or xeon which means buying everthing again, yet more expletives. I'm not a happy bunny. |

The bad news is that it's a live server, with about 20 quite active email accounts on it, and 4 lightly used websites. The 12.04 version is a long-term support release, so I have another 12 months before I have to do this, but I've been worrying about it for the last year or so ![]()
