Good afternoon everyone.
Paul_D. Finally got fed up with Windows about 7 months ago. I now have a dual boot homebuilt AMD64 MB with an 8 core processor. It is still dual boot, with the options to choose Win 7, really mad with the Free Upgrade to Win 10 which has features in which I neither want or need. Installed Kubuntu 15.04 about 7 months ago and apart from some niggles which I am possibly too lazy to fix or how to research solutions, I have found that my avg. points / results / runtime have improved by about 15 to 20%. Now that may be purely luck. I have had a various times used SUSE, and RED HAT since about 1998 at the level of better informed user but do not claim expert status. In those days if I asked too mant questions the reply would be RTFM aka read the flaming manual. ![]() |

Paul_D... Brad94 is correct in his instructions for a "headless" (command line only) Linux install (although working out which account key to use can be confusing). I run several servers unattended in this manner, and just log in every few weeks to apply security updates. However, Linux without a GUI is not something I would recommend to the uninitiated.
----------------------------------------If you want to try Linux, you'd be better off installing a distribution with a GUI (pretty much any variant will do, although Mint is an easy learning curve for Windows 7 fans). There is a similar BOINC GUI to the Windows one. I don't think running a GUI on Linux will make much of an impact on the crunching performance.

Morning team, interesting, thanks for replying, think it needs a bit of investigation to find something that won't just bake my head so might be a slow burner. I'm trying to sneak a new machine into the house under the (wife's) radar so it might be an idea to start with a new OS at the same time.
Thanks again for the input, gives pause for thought. |

Good morning everyone (well it is still morning here!). An overcast day with a high of 28C but it promises to warm up by the weekend. More gardening today!
