Re: HCC GPU APP HAS LAUNCHED.

I just started playing with a 7870 today, tomorrow I play with the 7970.

As far as the x16, x8, ... issue, I have seen many posts for Folding@home that say you will only see a reduction in performance below x4. Some have even tested this. I would imagine the same holds true for this project.

Better have some 1800Mhz RAM. I required 8 work units and 1800Mhz to get 95% utilization. It has more to do with NB/RAM throughput than PCIE throughput.

Re: HCC GPU APP HAS LAUNCHED.

Hi, nanoprobe:

Will this app_info file work with an AMD 6 core 1090T processor? I would like to increase HCC GPU production with my HD 6790.

Thanks!

@Bearcat- No, that will not work for GPU only. That app_info is for GPU and CPU HCC tasks. Below is what you need for GPU tasks only. Make sure your profile @ WCG for this cruncher is set to receive no CPU tasks.

<app_info>
<app>
<name>hcc1</name>
<user_friendly_name>Help Conquer Cancer</user_friendly_name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__ati_hcc1</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<file_info>
<name>hcckernel.cl.6.56</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>hcc1</app_name>
<version_num>656</version_num>
<platform>windows_intelx86</platform>
<plan_class>ati_hcc1</plan_class>
<avg_ncpus>1.0</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>1.0</max_ncpus>
<coproc>
<type>ATI</type>
<count>.25</count>
</coproc>
<file_ref>
<file_name>wcg_hcc1_img_6.56_windows_intelx86__ati_hcc1</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>hcckernel.cl.6.56</file_name>
<open_name>hcckernel.cl</open_name>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info>

To change the amount of tasks you want to run simultaneously change the <count>.25</count> parameter. .25 is for 4 tasks. .50 is for 2. .33 is for 3.

Once you place the file in your WCG project folder do any editing without removing the file from the projects folder. You'll need to stop and restart boinc for the changes to take effect. DO NOT remove the app_info file from the project folder if you have tasks that are still in your cache. You'll lose them. if you want to return to 1 tasks just change the <count>.25</count> parameter to 1. You will not be able to run WCG CPU tasks on this cruncher with this app_info in the projects folder.

I wouldn't try to run more than 2 at a time with a 6790 until you can determine how much of an improvement, if any, you get.

Re: HCC GPU APP HAS LAUNCHED.

I've set my two desktops to No New Tasks for World Community Grid, and I find that it makes both of them much more responsive to the keyboard and the mouse. Since it would otherwise be running HCC GPU workunits most of the time and seldom any WCG CPU workunits, it looks like the HCC GPU workunits are rather poor at sharing some computer resource with programs run by the user rather than started automatically. My guess is that the poorly shared resource is access to the graphics board.

Could you investigate, and try to add a way to prevent this? Perhaps add a user setting for each graphics board for what fraction of its resources the HCC GPU workunits are allowed to use? I suspect that users with graphics boards that have no monitors attached would want to allow the workunits to use those entire graphics boards, but those with monitors attached would want to limit this use.

Another idea - allow users to make server settings so that GPU workunits can only be sent during certain hours of the day and night, but CPU workunits can be sent any time.

Re: HCC GPU APP HAS LAUNCHED.

The work paid off with help from nanoprobe to get my 7870 working right. With 3 wu's crunched half a day, then switched to 4 the other half, tonights stats show 370,678 POINTS from just the GPU crunching 1,554 wu's. Will post tomorrow night stats with 4 wu's crunching in 24 hrs.

Re: HCC GPU APP HAS LAUNCHED.

Another idea to help those with poor keyboard and mouse response:

Provide a way to tell the BOINC client not to start any more HCC GPU workunits. It's less important whether this also suspends any such workunits now running.

No need to shut down the GPU entirely - several other BOINC projects offer GPU workunits with much less slowdown of the keyboard and mouse response

If you reached 370,678 that means were you crunching about half as fast as my 7950.

How many are you crunching with your 7950?

Why are you trying to compare the results of a 7950 to a 7870?
