How can I specify PG to use 1 core, when it wants .852?
----------------------------------------Also of note, PrimeGrid will be primarily when WCG runs out of Beta Units and when HCC GPU Units are not available. I already have 6 cores running, 4 on this machine, 2 on another, so I think I can give up 1 core on this machine and still contribute to science. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Chase Tarson at Oct 8, 2012 10:40:51 PM] |

How can I specify PG to use 1 core, when it wants .852? On a quad core do this. Open BoincManager. Click on tools and select computer preferences. Select processor usage tab. Change the setting the says On multiprocessor systems, use at most 100% of the processors to 75%. Hit OK button. That will free 1 core for your GPU while the other 3 will run CPU tasks.

Just so I am clear, while this limits CPU WU for WCG to only 3 cores, when a Beta Test comes out, the Beta Test WU will run on its own core, not taking the 3 for CPU WU.

Just so I am clear, while this limits CPU WU for WCG to only 3 cores, when a Beta Test comes out, the Beta Test WU will run on its own core, not taking the 3 for CPU WU. This is where it gets a little tricky. If you've dedicated 1 core to run PG and beta tasks show up the PG tasks running and in cache will probably have to finish before the beta task will start. That's what I've found happens when I run POEM even though POEM is set with a very low priority. The HCC GPU beta should then run on the core you've dedicated for PG. You'll just have to wait for the next beta test to see what happens and figure out what works best for you. FWIW I suspend all other GPU projects I'm running when the betas arrive and leave it that way until the beta run is done. Then I resume them.

Good to note. I guess we will see sometime this week if they keep to their release schedule.

Anybody else have the feeling that this thread got hijacked? Don't mean to be the bad guy here, but maybe you guys should take this to a separate GPU Forum thread?

Read the header of this thread it says "Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.56" GPU related question IS related to this thread. ;)

Read the header of this thread it says "Beta Test for Help Conquer Cancer - GPU v6.56" GPU related question IS related to this thread. ;) Hi Simplex0, Sorry, but no matter how many times I read the title of this thread, I fail to see how a hypothetical discussion about future HCC live or BETA WUs running concurrently on a single GPU is relevant to the topic. To make this clearer: what in the world has this discussion have to do with the latest GPU v6.56 batch of WUs? Either way, I don't want to fall into the trap of hijacking this thread myself, it was just a suggestion for the guys which have a very healthy interest in running more tasks on one GPU to take it somewhere specifically created for this purpose. Hope it makes more sense to you now. Cheers! Edit: If you'd like to continue this discussion, please PM me. I will not reply to any further comments on this topic here for the reason mentioned above. How can I specify PG to use 1 core, when it wants .852? Use a customized app_info.xml file for Primegrid. Now, since I don't run Primegrid, I've no idea if they're already supplying an example of this, but if you ask over at the Primegrid-forums chances are someone will point you in the right direction. While fooling-around with decreasing cpu-preferences works, if another WCG-beta-v6.56-GPU-task arrives your computer will suddenly have one cpu-core sitting completely idle. Using the example, while PG runs you'll run 3 CPU-tasks, while if WCG-beta runs only 2 CPU-tasks will run. Using a correcly configured app_info.xml on the other hand will use 3 CPU's if PG-tasks, and 3 CPU's if WCG-beta-tasks. ![]() "I make so many mistakes. A question: when the project will start, will be possible to run multiple wu on gpu?? Now, with custom config.xml file, i'm crunching 5 wu gpu poem@home concurrently (reserving 3 cpu cores)... We will not be officially enabling that. We have not investigated what you might be able to do unofficially. We have approved this beta to be released to production so we will be launching soon and then you will be able to experiment. |
