General problem with betas

I have a general problem with all the beta datasets I download.

The progress bar never gets higher than 0% no matter how long I leave them. I assume that there is a problem and remove them.

Is there an actual problem or is it just a cosmetic issue - the progress bar not progressing.

Thanks

Re: General problem with betas

Hi DrTeeth,

If you are talking about the GPU betas, I will take a shot in the dark here and ask: have you by any chance committed all your CPU cores to WCG and other projects? The reason why I ask is because even though these are supposed to be GPU WUs, they still need a CPU to be able to run. So, if you free a core, you should see progress.

If that's not the case, then you should probably post the beginning of your log and, if possible, the log of one of those WUs too. I may not be able to help any further, but that will definitely help other SMEs around here get to the solution faster.

Cheers!

Have noticed boinc will suspend one of your current WCG wu's to crunch the beta. But if his GPU is tied up on other projects, might just be waiting its turn depending how his resources are set at.

Re: General problem with betas

Curiously, where the Ready to Start tasks (See Status column) in BOINC Manager shows --- in the Elapsed time column, the percent progress is set to 0.000%. May be better if that had printed --- too... no confusion, if that is where DrT is looking. Not likely though as then the Dr would have seen CPU tasks with 0.000% and no Elapsed time, which is the key question really... was there any time recorded for these Beta's [whatever they are, GPU or CPU]

Hi,

Noticed this too. CPU and GPU both free and all cores (real and virtual) in CPU available. Time elapsed would progress but the progress bar would stay at 0%.

No logs that I know of as the last betas were some weeks ago. If somebody thinks they could still be available, I'll post them if I can find them.

Re: General problem with betas

The non-beta GPU units of data do not have this issue. The down side is that they CRIPPLE the graphics performance of my computer so that a right-clicked context menu no longer pops up, but glacially appears. Have had to disable my GPU for data processing.

Re: General problem with betas

Default is that GPU processing is stopped when you use the computer, which is when your PC whould not be glacial. The activity menu in BOinC manager has an option to tell when to run the CPU and when the GPU, which would be "Run CPU/GPU based on preferences". Then in preferences you specify for the CPU/GPU not to run BOINC and with how much delay they are to resume computing after you stopped using the computer.

Re: General problem with betas

Is there any way to run the CPU full time (the default values ensure that I cannot tell BOINC is running) and the GPU according to preferences? It does not seem to be the case, but I cannot be sure. ideally, I would like to run the GPU full time, but reduce the activity so it does not impinge on my regular use (just like the CPU).

Thanks

Hello DrTeeth,
BOINC has no tools for fine-tuning GPU. You need to look for utilitie for GPUs such as CCC.
