woohoo.. Release The Kraken! (Release the GPU work units!) Dr. Mike Interesting metaphor. Perhaps more apt that we would have expected too! Ready to move next week? Looking forward to getting those other crunchers out of storage and hot and cooking! ![]() |

Well, it kind of makes sense, but how do you direct GPU processing for HCC (or any other WCG work) to the GPU you purchased for doing the GPU processing. I don't understand how you separate the two GPU cards. The only way I know to do it is to use a card for your display that is on the list of cards not acceptable to WCG (List can be found HERE ) I would bet there is a more elegant way but I don't know about it yet. So, I guess, that would mean to get a separate card for GPU processing and install it without connecting the monitor to it. Is this correct? Is there anything else I may need to be aware of? OK. Well that is not what I was thinking but that might work. If you have one that is running GPU work now, you could by a small cheap Video Card and hook your monitor to the new small card. (this was what I was thinking). I am no expert on this. I have a big I7 cruncher that I put this NVIDIA GTX580 in and hooked the monitor to it. I have not had time to dig into it but now it seems as if my monitor is not working (black)..but when I Teamviewer into it, I can see that it is humming along really well running 6 HCC CPU WUs and one HCC GPU WU. I have to dig into this some more shortly but as of now I have customers with broken computers waiting. And the cooling fans for my V8 Cooler just arrived and I have to fix that and crank up that machine to full speed. I do this while the virus killer stuff is running on customer computers.Saw a new thread this morning that Kevin (knreed) started that has a couple of workarounds for the existing project profiles for GPU crunching. It also mentioned that they are looking to revamp the project profile pages too. Let me see if I can find it and add a link.... EDIT: Found it! I am so ready to move it isn't funny.. was really excited today when I saw some GPU work units. I currently have 6 pages of them waiting validation. Kind of exciting, even if it doesn't last very long?

Here's some additional links to other GPU related threads that you may find some helpful info in:

Regarding the wondering about how much impact GPU crunching would have on WCG, I just took a glance at just the graphs on the Global Statistics page and, while there wasn't a noticable change in run time, both points and results returned took a very noticable bump up today.

You can put an exclude GPU flag in the cc_config.xml file. If you don't have one create one in notepad paste the flag into it and rename the file cc_config.xml It goes into the BOINC folder <cc_config> <options> <exclude_gpu> <url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org </url> <device_num>N</device_num> 0 or1 for N your choice <type>nvidia|ati</type> type of GPU <app>hcc1</app> </exclude_gpu> </options> </cc_config> I've never used this flag so I'm not 100% sure it's constructed correctly. If you already have a config file with other options place the flag between <options> and </options> and don't include them or <cc_config> </cc_config> again.

Wow - I am very impressed with the points that the GPU wu's are returning.
----------------------------------------Granted they are about the same as the CPU wu's, but they only take about 4 minutes to run as opposed to an hour. I had to "snooze" the GPU to even type this, though. I am going to try an alternate video card tomorrow. One that BOINC won't like. When that happens, I'll let ya'll know how that works. It would be nice to have control of my computer again while crunching these GPU wu's. And just so everyone knows, this is not normal for GPU processing. I've been crunching on GPUGrid for quite a while, and it doesn't do this to my computer. This abnormality that HCC GPU crunching does on WGC is only a characteristic of this project. Otherwise, the only thing that you would notice is your card heating up, and your electricity bill increasing. Too bad they couldn't stick to the standards when writing these project wu's.
