Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 58 smilesmile

coffee coffee coffeeGood Saturday Morning Team coffee coffee coffee

Congratulations David Autumns and NiceMedTexMD (and Gerald and finman since I missed yesterday)(who stole it anyway?) !!!! applause applause applause applause

The GPU project with my NVIDIA GTX 580 and my new CPU cruncher both added to my points total so I think I will likely stay near this new level in points. I sold 3 of my netbooks (dual core atom processors) so that will offset my runtime hours, points and results but not a lot. I have one more netbook left if anyone is interested. It is HERE (if you get there before I get the web page changed it is the Green/White one.)

It is Saturday today. Everyone make sure to have a great one (for me if for no other reason wink )

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 58 smilesmile

Sekerob posted the following comment over in another forum:
Default is that GPU processing is stopped when you use the computer, which is when your PC whould not be glacial. The activity menu in BOinC manager has an option to tell when to run the CPU and when the GPU, which would be "Run CPU/GPU based on preferences". Then in preferences you specify for the CPU/GPU not to run BOINC and with how much delay they are to resume computing after you stopped using the computer.

-- Rob

Using that, along with the switch about pausing the GPU when the computer is in use should make the computer usable again. I am going to tinker with this a bit on the computer I have the 580 in.

I know some folks swear that the AMD cards outperform the NVIDIA cards on this project. I would really really like to see some stats on that. My 580 runs these WUs one at a time and they typically run about 2 mins and 49 seconds. Anyone else have any numbers on their card's performance? EDIT>> Up to 3min 13sec

Re: smilesmile Join "MyOnlineTeam" Today - Chapter 58 smilesmile

All right! The cc_config file worked.

I created the file, placed it in the BOINC folder, started the manager and this is what it dropped in the event log:

10/13/2012 9:25:37 AM | | NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 275
10/13/2012 9:25:37 AM | | NVIDIA GPU 1 (not used): GeForce 9800 GT
10/13/2012 9:25:37 AM | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 275
10/13/2012 9:25:37 AM | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 1 (not used): GeForce 9800 GT

Here's my config file:
<cc_config>
<options>
<exclude_gpu>
<url>http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org</url>
<device_num>1</device_num>
<type>nvidia</type>
<app>hcc1</app>
</exclude_gpu>
</options>
</cc_config>

I'm also using BOINC 7.0.31 (it's the only one that works properly with Windows 8).

It's crunching away and I'm still able to use my computer!

Several notes, though.
The only card that would work in the second PCIE slot had to be an nVidia card. It's what I have in my primary slot and Windows wouldn't load another driver other than the nVidia driver.
Also, a generic PCI card didn't work, either - even a hi-powered nvidia PCI card. Windows wouldn't load a driver for it.

It's also crunching those WU's even faster (about 3.5 minutes instead of 4.5 minutes). I'm guessing it's because I'm not using it as a video card.

Thanks for all the info! I will probably post this in the HCC GPU forum.

coffee coffee coffeeGood Sunday Morning Team coffee coffee coffee

Good show brown chris. I loved your post over in the GPU forum. smile smile

I put my GTX580 in a computer that is just used for crunching and I look into it using TeamViewer. I tried to use my KVM switch to look at it yesterday and cannot get anything but "no input" from the monitor (which is hooked up to the GTX580..I had problems with the other Video card in there). So need to stop the GPU processing and mess with it..but it is cranking out work so quickly, I hate to mess with it. And I am still covered up with other work. (double edged sword)

Everyone have a great Sunday today. smile
