power Reality check: When the power grid goes down, all grid-tie solar systems will go down with it NaturalNews) A lot of people believe they are becoming "power independent" by installing grid-tie solar systems, but what many don't realize is that virtually all such systems are designed to actively go offline when the power grid goes offline. http://www.naturalnews.com/036194_solar_system_grid-tie_power_grid.html I am hoping that I have a work-around for that. All I need to do is supply 220v to my panel, somehow, and the inverter will turn back on. I'm thinking my little portable generator will do just fine. I can split that 110 line to both of the 110v legs on the house, and throw the breakers to the utility. I just hope I never have to try it.

And how are you going to handle the problem of "night" when you won't be able to get any solar power. It seems to me that night is when we have most of our outages - maybe from people leaving the bar or a friend'd house and running into a power pole. Oh! That right - your power distribution is probably all underground. In Prunedale we still have power poles. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jun 18, 2012 5:17:32 PM] |

When it gets dark, solar isn't going to help much. Maybe I should send my son on the roof with a flashlight.

I can split that 110 line to both of the 110v legs on the house, and throw the breakers to the utility. I just hope I never have to try it. Chris, this is doable. I've done it. I have a 6500W generator with both 110 and 220 output that I can plug into. What I did was go down to the local home improvement store and tell them I was making a 220V extention cord. The "cord" is about 3/4ths on an inch thick and long enough to reach from the generator outside into the house to a 220V plug, in my case the plug for the kitchen stove. The plugs on this "extention cord" are huge as well (make sure you get the right ones, ie, male/female). When needed, I cut the main power breaker. That way, nothing from my generator can flow back out of the house to the power lines (keeps the utility happy). I pull out the stove and unplug it and plug my extention cord in to its 220 receptacle in the wall. The other end plugs into the generator. I crank it up and I have power to the whole house. I do go back to the fusebox and cut the breakers for stuff I won't be using. The main thing is to not try to pull more current from the generator than it can provide. That tends to trip a breaker on the generator. An electrician could easily set you up with the proper permanent installation. |
