I am not an electrician, but I seem to recall that, at least in Minnesota, a transfer switch is mandatory if you are running any kind of current through your household wiring/breaker box etc. this is precisely for the reason stated previously: to isolate your house from backfeeding into the electrical grid and potentially harming others. Perhaps an electrician or electrical distribution engineer or two could chime in and set the record straight.

I am not an electrician either so I don't know the codes that have to be followed when installing new equipment. However, as part of the remodelling of my house, I had solar panels installed by a company, Sungevity, and I raised a question about whether it would be possible to have something such as a battery backup in case we lost power and the answer was no. I think this was mostly to prevent putting a charge on the lines feeding the house from the power company. I do use a laptop which has its own batery so in most cases the loss of power is not a problem. Although I havent done so yet, I intend to buy a power unit for my desktop systems.

As fot heating (water and air), I have a different solution. I won't need hot water for any extended period so that is not a problem. The only furbace I have used for over 29 years is a wood stove. The stove I am currently is a wood pellet stove that uses a thermostat to control starting and stopping. It is as easy to use (with the exception of getting and loading the pellets) as an electric furnace and safer than a gas one.

Dave, WCG announced a week or so ago that they were updating all the VINA-based projects (DSFL, GFAM and SN2S) to zero redundancy. That's actually pretty common with most of their projects once they've run long enough.
