Re: Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012) Issues Thread

<edit> I excluded directory c:\programdata\boinc\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org from the security scans. Hate doing that though, because now anything in that directory will be ignored, including any little somethings from sources other than WCGrid...

Unfortunately even if you're ignoring the whole BOINC data-directory including sub-directories the SONAR-part of Norton will still stop anything it finds "suspicious", like "too high cpu-usage" and so on.

This was atleast the case 2+ years ago then ran Norton under win7-RC, there the only way was to let SONAR kill the 1st. wu after application-upgrade, for so choosing to manually restore the deleted application-file and at the same time ignoring this file.

BTW, interestingly enough, then I did have the problem, SONAR did not kill any wu's if BOINC installed as a service, so if don't uses computer for GPU-crunching this can be a thing to try if it somehow works...

Re: Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012) Issues Thread

The first three WU's I got, bombed due to AV issues (Norton Internet Security Ver. 18.7.1.3 - as can be seen from below), although after resolving that issue, the next two I received, worked a-okay, even though I tried to break them.

The three that bombed due to AV issues, were;

Re: Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012) Issues Thread

I know that it's been reported about Sonar causing the ...0022 errors. I checked my Symantic logs and found the following entry for Friday:

Severity: High
Activity: wcgrid_beta14_vina_6.20_windows_intelx86
(wcgrid_beta14_vina_6.20_windows_intelx86) detected by SONAR
Action: Quarantined
Date & Time Friday, May 25, 2012 2:31 AM
Activity: Threat Actions performed: 3
Users: Very Few Users:
Risk: High
File: c:\programdata\boinc\projects\www.worldcommunitygrid.org\wcggrid_beta14_vina_6.20_windows_intelx86 Removed

So I guess that's the ultimate confirmation
I would have checked earlier, but I'm lazy --
WCG -- stop sending us viruses wink

May I suggest that Norton users try something else. I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. Works well, uses very little resources, is very programmable and it's free.

Gathering that Symantec and Norton are synonymous in M-ware, it's interesting that the path too is weird (did the user change that?).

My bad --

I couldn't copy and paste the logs, so I had to type the results in.
I'll edit my post.

nanoprobe, one advantage of Beta, is to resolve issues such as this - after all, when these go into Production, the vast majority of WCG users don't read the forum's/check the results etc.. Thus, there'd be a LOT of other users facing this issue - unless Norton/Semantic learn that these programs are okay (which it should be doing now).

Re: Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012) Issues Thread

I did some searching on Norton's forums, and found this article on their web site, entitled "SONAR Protection quarantines files that are already excluded from future scans in my Norton 2010 product".

Not sure if this applicable or not. Someone will have to test (and it's difficult to test, unless you have a beta running on a machine with the fix, and one running on a machine without the fix, and it runs OK on the one with the fix, and does not run OK on the one without the fix).

I agree with you but Norton/Symantec has a long history involving these kinds of issues. I doubt they even care that people running DC are having problems because if they did this wouldn't happen as often as it does. JMHO.

So, does this mean that we have arrived at an age where developers will need to "register" their programs with the security software providers to avoid this from happening?

The good-guys huddling together on this matter sounds like a good idea.
