Re: Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012) Issues Thread

I thought my Win7 and XP machines had no problem with rebooting, but when I just checked the XP machine had one that said 'suspended' and I don't recall suspending it. Maybe that one was my fault.

On my linux machines, I just did
# /sbin/service boinc-client restart
I hope I didn't have to actually reboot the whole computer?

hmmmmm - the banner on photobucket seems to have grown longer.

With 1500 WU left to send at 9pm last night, I'd say no; except for resends

Re: Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012) Issues Thread

I received 42 in total. So far they have all returned fine, but I still have 12 to go on netbooks and a couple borged machines. So, they will be a while yet. However, on my I7 and my Q8200, I ran tasks on all threads concurrently alongside multiple virtual machines without any trouble either. My I7 had 3 VM's and the Q8200 had 2 VM's. So, the I7 had a total of 11 fighting for resources and the Q8200 had 6.

Edit: The I7 runs W7 Pro x64 and has a VM for W8 x64, Ubuntu 12 x64 (time 2). The Q8200 runs Vista Premium x64 and has a VM for XP Home and Ubuntu 10.04 x32.

Picked up 1 WU each on my 3 Windows machines. Rebooted each machine while the Beta was running. They all restarted OK and finished normally. One has validated OK and the other 2 are Pending.

Re: Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012) Issues Thread

Got 3 on Windows Vista Business edition Q6600. Did a normal shutdown and a power outage shutdown. Came back clean both times.
Got 4 on a Windows 7 64bit Phenom 9150e. Normal shutdown and power outage shutdown. All clean so far. No problems here.

Edit
Got 1 more on a 1.6ghz P4 Linux Mint 11 32 bit. Valid 11 hours
Got 1 more on a 1.6ghz P4 Windows XP pro Valid 22 hours
Interesting.

Cheers

Re: Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012) Issues Thread

If you look at the edits of my previous post, the security software is the closer suspect v.v. the -1073741790. One confirmed that back in 2009. What AV/Sec.Ware are you running? Any Event viewer entries of AV message log records [whence you can get to that information]? Is there a BOINC data dir scan exclusion set?

I am running Norton 360, v6.2.0.9, and you are correct: That was the culprit.
Norton did not recognize the file/thread, because it couldn't find it anywhere out there in the user community (surprise for a beta!). Norton therefore classified it as a high risk and promptly quarantined it, with the comments listed below. So the issue really appears to be that Norton's, umm, "social networking check" failed.
So, does this mean that we have arrived at an age where developers will need to "register" their programs with the security software providers to avoid this from happening? Anything I can do on my side to prevent this from happening for future files (as they will probably come with different names)?
Here is what Norton 360 had to say about the program:

Re: Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012) Issues Thread

Hi JJ,

Glad that forum search paid off. Think you're better off to do the standard thing, to exclude the C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ directory and all it's subs as what happens is, that BOINC copies pieces from .\projects\* to the .\slots\*\ where the actual data and app goes for the tasks that are running or waiting to run [pre-empted by user or BOINC]. BOINC sits in a sandboxed enviro, plus your security software will still scan the goings-on in memory.

And, some asked for masks and moaned about no exe extension, but that is actually exactly what the BOINC world is moving away from. Surely as my Avista 7 could be taught, your Norton can be too and be set a wider exclude for wcg*_windows_intelx86 and wcg*_windows_intelx86_64

Let us know how that fares.

--//--

edit: What helps the community too, is to connect with whereever Norton collects the ''friend/foe" data. If enough members give it the thumbs up, anyone else would not have the issue... which explains why some get the alerts and later ones don't.
