Is it possible to select which GPU to use? I have both an Nvidia GT 240 (non-Fermi) and a GT 430 (Fermi), and would like to compare them. These are not high-end cards, but both have 96 shaders and would make an interesting comparison.
But I want to continue to Fold on one why running the HCC beta on the other. I can select which one to Fold on, but is it possible to select the other for the beta? |

I continue getting Betas, about 60 WU received up to now but all of the CPU type. It seems my GTX 580 GPU's do not receive any. Hypernova, I did check all the necessary parameters. ... Maybe I am missing something. ![]() Is your BOINC installed as a service? For Windows GPU work, you need to have it installed as an application instead (something that I need to address too ).tonyh205 what do you mean as a service? ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Hypernova at Mar 16, 2012 6:35:57 PM] |

Look in Task Manager, Service tab. If BOINC is listed there, then it's installed having taken the Protected Application Execution option during install.
----------------------------------------Edit: That basically blocks BOINC from accessing the GPU [on Windows Vista / W7] Don't know about XP, but IIRC on that OS it's not an issue. Experts need to speak up. --//-- [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 16, 2012 6:47:28 PM] |

I can select which one to Fold on, but is it possible to select the other for the beta? I am assuming you have both of these installed now and both are working. As far as I know, BOINC will look to GPU0 first, next to GPU1, etc down the line. I've not run folding@home but if you can assign which GPU you want it to use, BOINC will look for the next available (supported) GPU. I am not familiar with what happens when you run BOINC and folding together. ![]() |

tonyh205 what do you mean as a service? Also see How to install BOINC as a service (BOINC 6 series) on Windows?. It says Note: Do NOT set it in Windows Vista and Windows 7 if you also want to use a GPU for crunching. The GPU will not be detected when BOINC is installed as a service. I notice that the BOINC start-up messages are also different between service and application installs. My XP machine (BOINC installed as a service) says "Running as a daemon" as the 4th line of the start-up messages, just before the Data directory line. My Win7 machine (BOINC now installed as an application) omits that. |

The other give away is the message line where the account is printed... if installed as user, your signin name shows of the computer, not your BOINC member name, when service it shows:
9 16-3-2012 17:29:53 Running under account boinc_master Of course, after a few days uptime on a multicore, that has long scrolled off into the stdoutdae.txt file. :D --//-- N.B. Some members post their startup log, and if not aware, post their real life name. Edit out if you will. |

tonyh205 what do you mean as a service? Hypernova, you will need to uninstall, then reinstall boinc. But pay attention so when it asks to install as a service, you click NO! Had to do this before. Yeah it sucks. Unless someone has found a way to edit some config file to change it (am not aware of any), you have to reinstall boinc.
Crunching for humanity since 2007!

PROBLEMS RUNNING MIXED GPU's
----------------------------------------For those who may be adding a second GPU to your machine that is not the same as the first one, you may experience problems depending on your BOINC version and driver. Typically, after adding the second card, BOINC may not recongnize both cards but only the "best" one. This is what to do: Boinc 6.10.x only uses the most Capable GPU by default, to enable the other GPU, you'll need to make a cc_config.xml file, copy the following and paste it into Notepad, then save it as cc_config.xml making sure it doesn't have a .txt extension, then drop the file in your Boinc Data folder, and restart Boinc, you should get a line in Boinc's messages saying: Config: use all coprocessors <cc_config> <options> <use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus> </options> </cc_config> Claggy {Credit goes to GPUGrid} ![]() ![]() |
