Re: Lead time for GPU beta

Would it be safe to assume that there wouldn't be any beta until March 15th?

although I've no 'insider info', I'd hazard a guess at that being so...

Re: Lead time for GPU beta

devilish
Looking at Known Issues thread https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,32741
Extended Outage: Upgrading Filesystem Software on March 15th from 14:45 UTC - 19:00 UTC
We will be installing the latest updates for the IBM General Parallel File System software that we use.
I think it is pretty obvious that WCG is trying to clear the decks before launching GPU computing sometime after 15 March. Everybody else has found it a can of worms no matter how carefully approached. I feel certain we will be unpleasantly surprised as well.

Courage!

Re: Lead time for GPU beta

No. If your Intel HD3000 supports openCL, maybe. Before running to shops, watch the reports of members succeeding to run the Beta.

Propose a thread that is solely for the purpose of reporting successes, with maybe config/specials/OS info sheets, which can be used by others as reference and not hijack that thread with question sidebars... put that in separate thread(s). By then we may also see a general GPU forum being created in the Support section, broken out from the science and BOINC support forums. The admins will be asked to move any stray threads or break off any OT posts... surely going to be a busy time for them.

I think most projects can tell which gpu is attached to their project, would it be just as easy to grab that data and put in another of your brilliant charts? That way you don't have 20 people saying gpu x works, if it isn't already on the chart then maybe those could be manually added.

Re: Lead time for GPU beta

Would not have proposed that if the data were public, which it is not. Since the info has to come off public data and my plate of charts is loaded, maybe another volunteer might want to collect the information in a matrix with the different settings that come to surface as working, at WCG.

No it doesn't support OpenCL.

Re: Lead time for GPU beta

I think that to avoid some chaos or a too long period of beta testing I think WCG should be very restrictive of the hardware at least in an initial phase. WCG should choose a limited set of GPU boards to qualify and support. It will be up to the crunchers that are interested to opt-in to adapt to the hardware criteria.
If the beta launch is on software criteria like OpenCL compatibility then due to the large number of boards and variants that exist out there, I am afraid an enormous flow of reactions may be triggered that it will be difficult to manage.
Better start very restrictive and iron out the problems and then enlarge the hardware scope.

Re: Lead time for GPU beta

Don't worry, it *should* already have been determined from the device connects in the past year and request for GPU work, what the lowest common denominator and most widely installed cards are with OpenCL. The vacuum cleaners with 3GB DDDR5 on-card RAM, 2000 shaders and 200000 GFLOPS are anyhow capable enough to not need much testing ;>)

edit: BTW, putting the GPU option in early surely facilitated to get a good data set on what's being offered by volunteer devices :O)
