I wish I could take a bath at work!!!! But that would be for cruncher "I need a bath at work", and not for cruncher "I need a bath" !! ![]() ; |

Am I missing something? Apparently there is no way to turn off CPU processing and accept only GPU processing as is done with other projects like Einstein and Milkyway GPU processing. ![]() Why would you want to do that? I'll look at putting that option in. The <no_cpu> tag exists on the BOINC side, we just need enable via our website and test. |

Yes Kevin, both Milkyway and Collatz have a CPU box and a GPU box to check. I do not run any of their CPU WUs, just the GPU until I can use the GPU here.....

Yes, shame on me for wanting to do that. Cheers. ![]() Well, I wanted to do that as well - at least for the first few GPU WUs. So if I've got a profile set up with only "Help Conquer Cancer " and "If my computer can process work on my graphics card..." checked, I guess I will be getting HCC CPU WUs along with the GPU WUs (once the WU's start flowing again)...correct? If so, would it be advantageous to free thread(s) using "% of the processors" setting in Advanced->Preferences->Processor Usage to keep GPU app fed with CPU cycles? |

The British Army never has 0000 or 2400. It goes from 2359 to 0001. We always said you could do what you wanted in those 2 minutes as the Army refused to accept they existed! How could that be confusing? "Monday" (pick the date) at 00:00, would be the point of time one minute before 00:01 (midnight, coming in from Sunday), and "Monday" at 24:00 would be the point of time one minute after 23:59 (midnight, going out to Tuesday, and identical to "Tuesday, 00:00").Quite logical really as 0000 or 2400 could cause confusion as to which midnight on which day it was, their way was fool proof Why is this so difficult to understand? Midnight marks the "line" separating two days. You can say "I am standing to the left of the line" (i.e, "Monday 24:00"), or you can say "I am standing to the right of the line" (i.e, "Tuesday 00:00), but the line remains the same: Midnight, going from Monday to Tuesday. |

The problem with making something foolproof as Scribe suggested is that they'll just make a better fool.

If so, would it be advantageous to free thread(s) using "% of the processors" setting in Advanced->Preferences->Processor Usage to keep GPU app fed with CPU cycles? Well we won't be able to start tweaking for maximum efficiency until we get some tasks but yes I'd say so, report stated tasks used 30-60 seconds CPU at the start and end of the tasks and ran for 6 minutes on a HD 6870. So using all cores for CPU projects will throttle GPU performance quite a bit and would slow CPU tasks somewhat as well. The logical and easiest option for a CPU intensive GPU application is for the project to configure a CPU core to support GPU processing although projects are reluctant to do that because those unused to GPU processing tend to complain. If the default ncpus value is less than 1, I'll be going with "87.5% of the processors" on an 8 core CPU to start with. Depending on the availability of GPU work I may instead use my own <avg_ncpus> and <max_ncpus> values in an app_info.xml file. I'll possibly need an app_info.xml anyway when the GPU application moves from beta to production when I want to do some WCG CPU tasks on the same BOINC install since the BOINC <no_cpus> configuration option is global. An advantage of configuring the number of CPU cores used to support GPU processing with an app_info.xml file is that if there is no GPU work available, CPU cores allocated are automatically reassigned to CPU tasks. Although with the new credit system I'll probably just bypass all that and run GPU tasks in Windows BOINC and CPU tasks in a Linux virtual machine BOINC. |

Since I'm assuming that this will work like other GPU projects you'll need to make at least 1 CPU core available to the GPU for it work correctly. If it is advantageous to run multiple WUs on 1 GPU than you may have to free up more than 1 CPU core. Only time and beta testing will tell.

The datime (date+time) now is: 2012.03.06Tu.2200.utc, or T-plus-60minutes. May I now have my machine communicate with the new "GPU-aware" WCG Boinc-server software?
