Dear all at /. and TW
----------------------------------------Your contributions to the research being carried out by the Institute of System's Biology have been superb and can never be taken away. But /. your daily total has gone from a truely stunning 1,321,532 points a day to just 390,434 yesterday. You have 3,284 team members TW your daily total has gone from 335,650 down to 212,880 yesterday. You have 704 team members. At this rate of fall off the 184 members of MyOnlineTeam will be beating /. in a couple of months on a points per day basis and as for TribalWar with all that fighting talk I don't know how you dare show your faces ![]() Come on we're providing the info to find cures and treatments for some of Mankinds most serious ailments here. Let's get on with the job. Keep those fans blowing and those CPU's glowing for the WCG. Best Regards Dave ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by David Autumns at Jul 4, 2005 5:44:05 AM] |

Reasons:
/. members have dissipated into other teams, usually by just re-registering, instead of transferring. So the number of retired members don`t show up. /. people prefer running linux rather than cygwin. /. people have forgotten about the project. /. has a technology centered community, the /. community here at WCG is almost non-existant, and contacting or motivating people is next to impossible. /. need a linux client to resparkle the interest. |

/. need a linux client to resparkle the interest. Hopefully the linux client will arrive soon to get your folks back up to full participation! |

Ohhh any chance of a 64-bit client too!
----------------------------------------In the process of moving over all my systems onto the 64-bit platform not sure if there been put to full use but I could be wrong! Anyone got a link to any information regarding different processors/system configurations and average daily points generated out! Would be helpful for crunches who fancy purchacing another system solely for cruching purposes! Thanks all |

Hi a0a
----------------------------------------Thanks for replying. The motive behind my original post was to spur you back into action. I don't want to overtake /. on daily points just because the interest has waned. I'd like to overtake /. when you are regularly churning out a Million points per day ![]() It can't be impossible to stir up /. again the WCG project has lost ~1 Million points per day something over 4 TFlops of computing power due to the crunching lethargy that has set in at /. to put this into perspective that's around 10% of the output of the grid which is an impressive figure in itself. /. were stirred into action through a single post on the /. Forum surely it is worth trying again. I don't buy the argument that /.'ers will only run Linux. Your Linux loving friends managed to muster 1.3 Million points in a single day on their Windows boxes. Sorry but I'm not going to accept this defeatist attitude ![]() Come on /. the WCG needs you ![]() Keep 'em crunching Dave ![]() |

I could do so much more for you guys with multi-processor support.

----------------------------------------Yes, but as a0a and I said in another topic, not sure it should be done before there is at least a Linux client or clients supporting multiple cores (whichever will be ready the sooner). As this topic and a number of other ones show, there are more and more posts complaining about the lack of multiple core support... Depending on how the agent code is written (programming language, dependencies), threading the clients may be easier or harder than making clients on other OSs... > I don't buy the argument that /.'ers will only run Linux. Your Linux loving friends managed to muster 1.3 Million points in a single day on their Windows boxes. Indeed. Many Slashdotters don't run Linux. I currently use only LiveCDs on my computer, the one I'm writing with. I used Linux much more at the university. ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by DEBROUX Lionel at Jul 7, 2005 9:26:50 AM] |

Hi David,
I understand perfectly well about your motives. :) let me explain a little. For example, I haven`t seen the team lead of /. (w98) make one single post in *any* forum here. There`s no special WCG /. website dedicated to this project. The means of contacting /. members that rarely visit the forums are basically non existant. There is little he or any /. member can do but to try to post to the fornt page again. The front page of /. is moderated, which means only interesting stuff gets through. Calling for more participation is simply not interesting enough. If something like multi-core or linux versions of the client appear, or if the results of the previous batches bring some great new insight or show that there is something derived from the cycles, or if data is opened up to the general public, THEN we have something to talk about and regain the interest of the populace. I`m sorry that performance has gone down too, but it was to be expected. I don`t have a defeatist attitude, I`m very realistic about this. Numbers will only go up with the next spike. And to maximize the size of that spike, the triggering story should contain equally interesting news. The choice is whether we stirr it up real hard in one go, or to have a more or les sustained moderate regained interest with several items that don`t bring much news other than begging for involvement. Oh and also, while /. stats slip, there is something to fight for again ;) Of course /. is not only just about linux, but it usually helps ;) |
